 Re: Salbris 2011
Finally back home after two weeks in France.
As with others we thought the entry organisation was crap, but after six hours waiting on the roads outside Salbris we ended up with a reasonable pitch by the corner of the chateau in the overflow/forest section. Only problem was noisy nederlanders. Boomy music is acceptable to say 1 in the morning, but 3.30 is beyond a joke. I don't know what the people with small children thought. A bit of consideration for others would not go amiss. Anyway they seemed to disappear after a visit from the gendarmerie.
Of course, as some of you may know, our major problem was a buggered gearbox. We travelled about 200 miles in third to try and save the box. We booked it into the 'garage' on Wednesday supposedly at 2pm. By about 4 the French crew, after a little chivying from us, had a quick listen and thought the gearbox had been 'unwound.'
Not long after Barry Annells came along said he had heard us go by and thought it was a bearing failure. He then started coordinating a rescue effort. At first the plan was for 2CV Viking to repair, but he could only do it on his stall and the French crew led by Christian wanted it repaired in the garage. (I don't know why)
Then Barry told us that our saviour was at hand in the person of Rick Pembro. You don't know how relieved I was to hear that Rick was there.
Left car in garage on Wednesday night. Looked in on Thursday morning to find that the fairies had taken the car apart and deposited the gearbox on the plastic sheeting which masqueraded as a workshop floor.
Thursday afternoon about 3pm Rick got started. It didn't take him long to reduce the gearbox to a pile of parts on the table. The front bearing had virtually disintegrated. I had spoken to Rick at Registers Day mentioning the symptoms and he had correctly identified a worn front bearing.
The actual gears had survived remarkably well so Rick gave it a complete overhaul. New bearings all round plus synchro rings which Rick had with him and 4th. gear synchro and needle bearing supplied by 2CV Viking.
Rick and me fitted the gearbox back into the car at around 6.30pm. We called it a day.
Friday morning I was slightly disappointed to find that the fairies had not returned that night, so I had to re-assemble everything myself. I prefer that really. At least I know It's done correctly.
Took me about 3 hours with just a help lifting in the engine. Started first time and we were out of there.
My grateful thanks to Barry and especially Rick which allowed us to enjoy the rest of the WM and our 2nd. week in France. Thanks also to Mick Popka for charging my iphone.

 Re: Salbris 2011
Glad to hear a happy end! At least it wasn't a boring couple of days eh? I did wander past the garage and think to myself how I'd rather push a car home than let them fix it. At least I know where I've cut corners and lashed things up.
Shame you had an issue with the Dutch, you should have camped where we were, no signs of a party erupting there, I'd have loved a post beer tent dutch party ! I wouldn't go to the spa meeting if I were you, the wreckheads there go until half six in the morning although nobody complains, it's what's to be expected. If kids are tired they sleep, although the Swiss twat over the road from us who had a problem with the flashing beacons was taking the piss even further, saying it was keeping her kids awake! They sleep with their eyes open do they?
I wandered over to the posh end by the chateau a couple of times, it was much nicer than the refugee camp we ended up in!

I have to admit that the posh bit was in the "Chateau" area...you had very posh toilets....you even had sinks with running water ...I know my place....
