Re: I2F tour of NW Scotland??
An that hooray henry on telly last year
"Totally self sufficient" my arse if you look in oolongs photo there was no oil well or refinary at Sands where he set up home, so what powered the LWB Defender??
I lived and worked there 20 yrs ago when it was under the the Wills (woodbine) family the place was dying on its arse and was close to being bought by some Dutch shooting sydicate, there was only one man in his 20s left who was native and he was jacking in the farm to go work offshore
since then there was a community buy out of the estate and the more people that go and stay at Mrs Fish (yes really!) hotel and stay on the campsite and go on Mikes Kayaking tours eat at the walled garden and generaly spend money, the better for that community.
Its a magical place just dont spoil it. Sean

Re: I2F tour of NW Scotland??
"… drive down to Invergarry that makes this veteran wordsmith struggle for superlatives. The potent cocktail of mountain, moorland, loch, waterfall and forest, spiced with sudden views of one of the world’s most inspirational coasts, is more intoxicating in its beauty and variety, if not in terms of sheer majesty, than anything I have encountered elsewhere in the world. That considered statement is made by one who has travelled to Iceland, Alaska, Afghanistan, China and Borneo. "the late Phil Llewellyn, quoted from Car magazine The roads are well-suited to our cars - narrow, winding lanes with poor foundations as well as curving, fast, wide, well-surfaced roads without the frequent roundabouts and sharp turns so many English roads are known for. Managed to overtake umpteen cars and a couple of coaches stuck behind a slow lorry (and inexplicably unable to overtake - about 25 vehicles at a steady 40mph) returning through Glen Coe, a few years ago - even fully loaded. Love being able to see the road for two and three miles ahead! The weather doesn't look half as good as yesterday for sopwithcamel, just goes to show how much notice should be taken of weather forecasts! Waves suggest gusting force 5-6 and low cloud/drizzle at Eilean Donan webcam. Later on someone may see a 2CV on this bridge (the modern one!) and the biggest arrows represent 60mph winds, red arrows gusting winds:

The forecast was for "good" because it was in the bottom right of your wee maps up north you learn to ignore the weather people on the media as they interpret the met forecast for their thick audience. I wish the bbc would start to show Isobars on their maps again Sean

Re: I2F tour of NW Scotland??
Agree about the isobars, Sean - the bbc's online weather page doesn't seem to give wind speeds anymore, let alone isobars, even on the Atlantic chart. Unless it's a health and safety issue, of course. All part of the great dumbing down of England, where state education leaves students £15000 in debt at the end if it and the Westminster government has landed the UK with £1.4 trillion debt, estimated to take 30 years to recover from. Hospitals and schools which are owned by bankers, I could go on.
Just pleased I have a gorgeous car which brings a smile to my face every time I use it!

Jonathan wrote: Anybody fancy a trip upto north-west Scotland, maybe sometime in spring? Thought it would be a good excuse to meet up and have a road trip in one of the most beautiful parts of this wonderful planet we inhabit. Perhaps meet at Loch Lomond and drive up over Rannoch Moor and down Glen Coe to Fort William, then over to Skye and maybe up to Cape Wrath and John O'Groats? Give your thoughts here We can discuss when/where and options. Look forward to hearing from one or two of you Just a reminder about this idea, with the new year upon us, I thought we could start to get something planned
