Post Re: My 2cv
Will post a bit more, when I have time, but I will say....I've totally fallen in love with the Isle of Harris & Lewis, the roads are amazing!! Smooth and on Lewis, nice long straight sections, superb!! The roads on Skye are far worse, lots of potholes and really deep!! :x I want to move to Lewis :D

PS:- Only saw one 2cv in Scotland, a Dutch red Special heading south, as I was heading north, over Rannoch Moor. The wind and rain over Rannoch Moor was so bad, it was breaching the near-side frontdoor window and soaking the passenger seat(just as well it was empty  ). Rest of the week was near perfect weather :D

Right...I'm off to bed now, in work for 7am

Very pleased it went well, Sop.

Almost making me nostalgic for t'Island. Mind you, when you spend the first 20+ years of your youth trying to get off the flamin' place, it kinda loses its appeal...

Aah, (mixed) memories...

Looking forward to the photies :)

Wow, Sop - you really went for it!

I think it was on the beach in Bernera, Uig that the Lewis Chessmen were found in the mid 18thC.

I've actually named my li'l boy Callan after the standing stones - an impressive location, eh? Beats the pants off Stone Henge for spookiness... Did you check out the Carloway Broch nearby to this?

Did you go up or down the really twisty part of the Bealach na Ba to Applecross? Going up is a first gear job on these corners; going down is simply a "f**k me the brakes had better hold..." type affair.

An epic trip - great photos.

Post Re: My 2cv
Right then, common people tend to think that old cars are unreliable and expensive, but I've done 110,000miles in my 2cv and it now stands at 180,000miles on it original, untouched engine. The clutch has done at least 110,000miles and so have the disc brakes(they were both replaced before I bought the car)I had the discs looked at about a month ago and they haven't even started to wear yet, even though I use the brakes HARD!! A set of pads I had fitted, lasted for 70,000+miles and were only replaced because they had glazed and hardened. I always keep my foot to the floor and brake as late as possible, because of the lack of 'power'.

Now, my 2002 Euro-box has just had a service and the alternator belt & tensioner replaced(the tensioner bearing seized on the M5 last week and disintergrated, taking out the belt at the same time!!) when I arrived at the garage to collect the car, the service manager commented that the discs should really be replaced, due to corrosion and wear. The car has done 110,000miles and the discs were replaced by the previous(first) owner at 50,000miles, just before I bought it and will cost about £350!!! :x

And people want to know why I travel further each year in the 2cv, than in the modern Euro-box!! Because it's cheap and reliable, far more so than modern shite!! Keep your 2cv guys & gals, you know it makes sense 8-)

Post Re: My 2cv
I completely agree.
I've done about 40k in my current 2cv, at a cost of...ummm...service items and fuel. Same goes for the other six before it, minimal outlay for maximum mileage.
In fact the only tyre I can remember having to replace was when a front shock absorber leaked oil and I ignored it (like you do  ) long enough to wear the tread unevenly, the rest have lasted for ever.
