Because you will have to have some space to tilt the tank to get the filler tube over the chassis arm. Best not take the hose between tank and filler tube off. Mine was rock hard so in my wisdom i cut it off. It was very hard to find a fitting replacement hose, the modern ones are different size. And even that replacement hose took a lot of work to force it on tank and the tube...

Moving to another 2cv : the blue 2cv6 Special 1987 shown above ;

The 26 35 Solex CSIC carb is fitted with a "Choke pull-off vacuum device diaphragm unit" or " vacuum pump for choke valve "

On this carb the unit is broken or disabled as the little rod is not attached to the diaphragm.... however the choke works well .

On some pictures of this type of carb , this device is replaced by a blocking plate.

What is the principle of this device ? Is it not necessary ?

In the first photo the level is obviously wrongly positioned.
Nevertheless it doesn't make any difference, as it's contribution to choke function is minimal, so you can plug it off.
Just make sure is not loose, it's diaphragms perforated, or missing.

The choke pull off's purpose, it to pull off the choke.

if you sit idling the engine with the choke on, and then pull away. The extra vacuum will pull the choke off some for you and allow extra air and less fuel.

not necessary if you know how a choke works though.

you can also just make and install a blanking gasket, and reinstall the faulty pull off unit. I filled the hole on mine with epoxy after cleaning it out with a drill bit.

I understand that this is an unnecessary " complication" . The previous owner must have rightly disabled it .

The reason why I am looking at this carb is that after having worked perfectly for years , two days ago , the secondary choke stopped working as if the main jet was blocked..
Unfortunately it is impossible to take it out without dismantling the carb.

The car managed to get back home at very low speed

However the following day the car started ok on the primarry choke ...and after several attempt ... the secondary choke suddenly worked ok as if the jet had cleared.

... but the idling did not work .; it stalled.

I drove the car ...and after 5 minutes the idling was fine again.

I installed an additional filter before the carb.

Yesterday, i took the car, the idling disappearred after 10 minutes ....

I blew air through the idle jet : no effect

I took the car on the road and after 10 minutes the idling came back later..

I guess that there is something in the carb but I cannot understand how it clears itself automatically .

Could it be the result of some "deterioration" of the fuel ?

I forget exactly what the mechanism is called or how it works, but there is a link or spring connection between the first and second throttle plates.

I have read reports of it having an issue and cause symptoms similar to those you describe.

So, is the second throttle closing properly, or does it just flap about?

No ! it seemed to close properly but i will check .
The engine runs 100% fine... now.

By the way , i understand that the car has been filled with E10 fuel.
Coul this be the cause ?

Ok, so I've had more coffee now ....

I think its a return spring that breaks on the second throttle plate spindle. This causes the second throttle to be a bit random in it's position.

E10 itself, will not cause the symptoms you describe.

Has the rubber fuel pipe perished on this car?

Check the filler cap, to ensure it lets air in as the tank empties.

check any joins in fuel delivery where air may be pulled in.
