That's neat :)

May I ask (with pictures :) ) what welding equipment you have, as I'm thinking of up grading ...

Cheers, Bois,

the mig I bought back in 2013, it's an SWP 170 C, does 0.6 and 0.8 mm. wire and I'm using some no deposit refillable Argon bottle. After struggling with cheap welding helmets i got a Bolle recently and that's made welding almost pleasureable...almost ;) .

Too dark and cold for pix tonight :) .

Perhaps leaving this in the red diesel since October 2019 wasn't such a good idea...

Eesh!

Whatever is coating it won't come off easily with either petrol or thinners.

I think it's even beyond the ultrasonic cleaner to retrieve this one  .
The only reason I soaked it was to try and ease the oil cooler unions off without damage... one gentle little go on them with a 16mm. spanner and they snapped off anyway, so it goes :) .
Next time if there is a next time, I won't leave it so long  .

As crazy as it sounds, don't bin any of it as I know the pre-war/vintage guys are kicking themselves for scrapping stuff that is now rocking horse poo and what they had thrown away in the past would have been perfectly serviceable today. Too many 2CV engines, gearboxes, steering, and suspension units, and associated components have be needlessly binned over the years. We'll all be in a better position in the future if we learn the mistakes of the vintage boys and just left them to one side 8-)

Where did you find that in Loch Ness??
But cleaning, did you try degreaser, Overhere we ha a product called Dasty. It's extremly effective. Other idea, i had an part of my 5hp's engine that i tried to clean. Nothing came of so i took washing up liquid and hot water and to my surprise it worked.

Oh wow that came up well. I left some suspension shackles in fresh diesel to get them clean and noticed a tiny bit of rust after. It's fine, not what I expected. But apparently diesel can do that, after looking at some engineering type sites. Who knew! (Not me..)

I had the U-joints in the driveshaft that didn't move very well. I did put them in diesel for a week and the were very supple after that i did see a lot of rubbish coming out of them when they were moved. They are still in the green 57 since 20+ years.
