Getting the shed back together. I put the heat exchangers and torpedo back on and it was blowing at the manifold. Mostly on the off side and a little on the near side. I took it off and made sure all the old gasket is off the heads, and re assembled. Still blowing on off side. It would appear the nuts are pulling the manifold to the head, but it is blowing to either side. It may have been blowing very slightly before, but not like this. What could cause it to get worse when I was trying to fix it? |

The heads were off a good while ago, but this has gotten worse without removing them. I don't think its an alignment issue. |

I'm a bit confused Roger, before fitting the manifold don't the heads have to be centralised and tightened to initial torque, then with decent gaskets(and some copper grease on both sides of 'em) and solid studs, nuts and inlet bolts, torque 'em up and then do the heads to final torque. Exhaust manifold faces not excessively eroded? |

Rob, the heads were off (to fit used 652 barrels and pistons) a few years ago, and the engine was in another vehicle then. I took the manifold off to drill and tap it for a map sensor. Putting it back on, it is blowing! It should go back on without disturbing the heads again. Perhaps it did blow before, I have Burton clamps now and I always thought it was blowing elsewhere.. There was always carbon signs of it blowing elsewhere. Anyway, this is a temporary fix to get it road worthy for MOT. Once its through that, I will carry on with the LPG fuel injection project. I also have some new 652 barrels somewhere! Edit I'll try copper grease next week, but I'm at hat camp this weekend. |

Exhaust manifold now sealing. On closer inspection of the actual manifold, there was still some gasket that appeared to have been on there for some time. It was a thin layer close to the securing holes. It looked like previous attempts to remove it had only succeeded in polishing it, and leaving a raised area around both holes. I cleaned it back to bright metal with an abrasive wheel in my cordless drill. All good now. ....... apart from the engine knocking being more pronounced now. |
