Re: My Red Special
I'm thinking next time we should try pulling away in 2nd gear. Poor nephew, he did really well not stalling it but as soon as forward motion was actually happening, it went all jerky and stalled! He did well to be honest, my first time was horrific and the guy got out of the car and wouldn't teach me again. Lol..

Re: My Red Special
I have always loved people's body language in the passenger seat. I tend to go full speed everywhere and fear no corner. It's hilarious what people do.
I do understand, but it's still funny.
This car came to me with a sticker on the dash saying 'passengers are requested to refrain from screaming'. Pahahaha.

Re: My Red Special
I had a 1967 2cv, the previous owner was a very gentle old man. It had a sticker with a skull on the bonnet with the text jump or die...

Re: My Red Special
Changed the oil to slightly thicker for the hot weather. 20x50 now. Greased the king pins and gave us an a good clean before a long trip. Funny how cars feel so much nicer after a clean isn't it.

Re: My Red Special
Had some new wheel bearings fitted and it does feel rather nice. Also been pottering a bit fixing the paint around the front window apertures. That same rust area that's common. Done before but all looking rough again, all I can do is encapsulate, paint it with POR15 and then blow it over with Rouge Vallelunga. It looks way better and a bit more water repellent for the coming winter!
It's still doing its long trips with aplomb for the most part and really cheaply!

Re: My Red Special
Changed my capacitor. I'm away camping in a hilly area and have been noticing a missing HP or two lately I thought, with some flat spots affecting hilly pulls. Juddering on gentle throttle. The occasional weird starting too, out of character. Still starting straightaway, but oddly. I made it so it's easy to change and put a load of connectors on some capacitors so I could easily change one at the side of the road, since they're such random quality these days. Came in handy, took about one minute to change!
Definitely better on hills now.

Re: My Red Special
Today was great. A really excellent Bentley mechanic we use at work agreed to give me a hand with it.
I put a new starter in it recently, but it wasn't starting as well as normal. We changed the points, made a fresh ground for a couple things, capacitor included. (I have it mounted on the headlamp bar for easy changing since they got so unreliable.) New spark plugs. Timing properly set by Mike. He checked the gas on his exhaust gas meter and it was only the mixture screw had wobbled out somewhat, as has happened before so it was just way too lean. Fine now it's been adjusted. I don't know why this happens but it's not the first time. Mike stretched the spring out a bit but I've tried that before I think. Mike adjusted the valves. I did them last, about three years ago or more.
The points were absolutely awful! Amazing it was still running really.
Started lovely to come home but it was only a short journey. It has a longer journey to do on Sunday so that'll be a real test. But I think it's back to its normal lovely self.
Mike quite enjoyed working on it I think. He's used to very high end classics, Alvis, Bentley and Rolls, at this was quite a change for him.
The bracket that lives on the oil filler neck, for the alternator sliding adjustment bracket, needed repair too. The bolt on it had lost its thread and was wiggling out. This took ages! Eventually I just took it off so Mike could drill and retap it properly. How satisfying that it's been fixed so properly.
I had dissembled the front of the car for him to make things easier, and when I removed the fan hub I noticed my oil cooler was all gunked up. Mike cleaned it right up with a brake cleaner and compressed air. Awesome.
