A dishwasher can get part surprisingly clean. :D

I wonder if Daisy will allow that .

A friend was sitting in the bathtub cleaning an engine when his parents came home ;-)

I have some history :) .

We don't have a dishwasher or a working bath (the only hot water in this house is from a kettle or the electric shower) and I'm not sharing the shower with the flamin' thing  .

I feel so much at home.

We do not have a dishwasher either, we like to do the washing ourselves .
Gives you time to talk to each other .

Still cleaning and examining the engine.

The rocker shaft screw is a sod to loosen, I used a Bahco adjustable and a mallet to 'shock' it undone. It will be replaced with a suitable 8mm. Socket (Allen) screw.

Just to remind myself the order of things.

A similar amount came out of the other head too, they certainly do 'auto de-coke'. Valves that were closed don't look too bad, the two that were open are a bit crustier but salvageable: some very light corrosion on the rocker shafts near the small spacer, I got to this flamer just as it downed it's drink in the 'Last Chance Saloon'

Its coming along. :)

What are the valve seats like?

When you lap them in, try to take off as little as possible, or they may recess.

Have packed up the engine into storage tubs, I turned my attention to the Gearbox.

Both Drums came off very easily despite the adjuster heads being already rounded off. No movement from the box though.

The pickling in Diesel certainly helped, even the little split pins came out intact.

Because the box is seized, it was challenging to get the nuts off the Hub assembly. Tapping with a copper mallet on the inverted drum soon had the units out.

Ooh, I don't like that, if the previous owner hadn't drained the box it could have had a more positive outcome

Argh! It's not looking good, seems like all the bearings (at the very least) are Kaput but I haven't given up just yet :)

Bearings a probably dead but the gears might be ok. It was the same in an 1925 citroen 5hp gearbox that i found in an garden where it had been laying for several years without the lid on it.
The oil in the gearbox wouldn't have helped very much as the level is far below the bearings.

Bearings are relative cheap. Don't worry about them. Inspect gears after good cleaning, if they have some rust on their teeth, they may be a little noisy, but if they have deep rust they may be gone...

Thanks Bois!
If it's just changing bearings, I don't mind that, it is stripping the box and trying to put it all back that scares me :D .
