Looking at the earlier photos - it holds the plastic panel/dash in place.

Thanks everyone! :) What Chris said. It's the bracket for the central screw in the dash, above the wiper motor. ;)

The LHD cars don't appear to have that central screw. I suppose there wouldn't be a need for it being as they had different fixings. The cross member I bought has holes for the fixings for a LHD dash.
