I can really see the appeal of stuff like this, are there any technical oddities that we have come to expect from later Citroens, stuff you don't find on other vehicles? Or is it actually very conventional?

Pre Traction Avant models were conventional and boring for their day. That's not to say a 5CV 'Cloverleaf' is considered boring today.

I'm aware of the vehicle and its layout, I meant more on an intricate mechanical level.

Russel, lets put it this way... You can see at this car they were in the middle of a learning curve of making decent cars and inventing stuff.. For this type of car (small cheap car) there where a lot of novitices at this car, starter engine electric lights ect.. But for instance the foot-brake pedal works only on a drum at the diff.. so braking hard will end up in one wheel turning backwards.... The handbrake works on the two rearwheels... also the pedals where mixed up and only one door to enter the car.... I guess for the weight of this engine you can make 4 of your seicento engines.. But after about 100 years it is still turning like a sawing machine...

I think Fer has it right, a 2cv is a very modern car by this one....

Yes it is running very nice now. The thing that surprised me the most is that all parts are so heavy. It is supposed to be a little light car. (Around 500 kg) And out of 850cc only come 11 hp.

It's a lighter car than the 2CV, so that really IS light.

After finishing the wings, runningboards and restoring the wheels it was the first time i could see the car in the way it supposed to look.

than i did rebuild the wooden steering wheel. It was completly falling apart by humidity and woodworms. But luckily all needed parts as special screws were still there and one connection to the spoke was still intact so it could be copied. It was glued by several sheets of plywood and than cut round edges with a router.
