Was there any indication the gearbox had a fault?

No apart from cracking noises in the gearchange when the gearbox was war after some 10 kms. Have the stuff taken apart. It took me 2 hours, also because the previous owner did put a lot of non orginal (size) nuts and bolts in. I was constantly changing tools. It's strange how you can get used to the original ones with those i can work almost blind. The lot was extremly greasy but on the other hand all came apart easy. ;-) Gearbox is in the cellar now, will take it apart next week after some cleaning..

Took the gearbox apart. It is completly dead. The pignon did loose an half tooth, that must have dropped between the teeth of the crownwheel. Than it had the loud bang and lost 2 more half theeth of the pignon. The force between the teeth did crack the aluminum box that was just hold together by the brake flanges..... See the pics.

Geo gave me the ex-gearbox form his BMW deuche (Une grande merci). I already cleaned the outside a bit with a scraper and a vacuumcleaner!! The old grease on that gearbox was very dry. Here one of the teeth from the gearbox. Incredible that such a small piece of metal can destroy an complete gearbox. I didn't see something yet that could have been catched in the gears. The bearing from the pignon has a bit of play but that could also have been caused by the "accident".

Are you going to put the complete Geo-gearbox in your deuche, or are you going to recover the original gearbox with parts of the Geobox ?

The piece acts like a lever, and really can destroy castings. Also the casting can be very brittle after decades of use...

If you are using parts from that exploded box, clean them very carefully, to have all metal chirps out...
