Today i had to replace a lightbulb in my mothers citroen c3. It took me more time than taking the engine out of the 2cv....stupid modern cars....

The 57 started cutting out on accelleration, so the tank must be almost empty. So drove of the road and put 5 liters in. It started but then the idle was gone. I think the almost empty tank drew rubbish in to the carb. So i took the idle jet out to clean it. Than vroom, all start working again.

I don't understand why dirt will only get pulled up from tank when the level is low?

Considering that the fuel pickup tube is almost at the bottom of the tank, I'd reckon it's an old wives' tale... Or maybe it's a hangover from motorcycling days, when the 'reserve' tap was fed from a tube sited lower in the bike's tank than the normal inlet? I would agree Ken. The only difference I can think of, is the fuel may move around more as the level drops, and lift sediment. Anyways, AZL, glad you sorted it.

Why do I have to clean my carburetor every 5 or 6 months or so? There is always some sediment in it, every time I open it. Despite an extra filter in the fuel line.

A metal tank I would guess.
Rust from the tank I suspect. Particles to small for the filter to stop.
Does the filter look like its capturing anything when you clean your carburetor?

I'm happely driving on Lpg.. for more then 25 years now.. The last 10 years on Lpg vapour injection, no problems here..
