I hope you and joe know a good welder, that bulkhead is nicely crispy :)

And agree, it could be bad trying to start it, but as youve already had it turning over, id try anyway, i mean, whats worst that could happen!!

 I must admit that when I started up the beige beast after 30yrs of standing all I did was change the oil and plugs....

Thing is, it was started and run until 4 years ago! I've had cars start that have been sat for much longer without anything! The engine felt free whilst cranking but it was clear the starter was gone!

It'll only take you 15 minutes to get the heads off and whilst you're at it you can put new manifold buts on and clean the carb out, etc...

Have a look inside and clean them out. It something you then know is ok.

Although, again, in fairness we started the van up and it hadn't run in 10 years... had been dry stored though.

15 minutes? That assumes the front end is already off and the manifold studs all come off easily...

Going to collect the Dyane on Thursday so any engine tinkering will be done after that. To be fair i think the engine is the least of our worries im sure after how she felt when trying to start her the other day that the engine is fine and a case of changing starter motor which was just shagged. The oil was not sludgy and filled with detritus so was in reasonable condition.

However will post as to how Thursday goes because once she is back up to the unit we will attempt to get her running.

Picked up the Dyane today. Pulled her out of the ground she was rather sunken. Loaded her on to trailer and off up to the unit. Tyres all took air and have held it shockingly enough!

Drained off the old fuel which was a nice brown color, changed the fuel line, pump and top of carb and she started straight away NO PROBLEM! took her for a spin off road and she ran like a dream so pleased. Cannot believe she really has stood the test of 18 years outside in all weather not moving an inch.

So its bodywork next!

Pics to follow of today's Dyane rescue :-)
