If it is totally flat then you don't stand a chance. Very old cars and motorbikes had magnetos which generate the electricity for the spark. You can start them without a battery. |

Jameswallace wrote: So how come you can hand crank a car with a dead battery In My experience you need at least 8v in there to have any luck. With a DEAD battery reading nothing on a multimeter) even rolling down a steep hill over about 100m won't get you anywhere. |

You can make a 2cv run on a 9 volt battery (little rectangle block battery) I once did that on points, will work with my ignition too I'm pretty sure, however don't hit the brakes/lights or its gone.... and you need to take the connection of the dynamo of.... (I guess but I didn't remember doing that.) |

Exactly - I rolled down 10 km at an average of 7% in 3rd gear trying to start and there was nothing. Only a boost from a 12volt booster got me home in stages. But now I have fixed my dynamo there is no stopping me

thanks for that guys, I tried it with a battery but still no joy, probably the plugs, and all the earths need shining up. anyway the blokes pickup has arrived so i´ll have to be working on that for the next month or so..the thing is massive you could get the azu on the back of it!!

thanks jacques  pleased with my find today pulled out some very slick seats with headrests from a dyane in the scrap yard today. the pair along with a set of seats for a mercedes fintail, and a mercedes headlight for 100€ bargain

guess who´s a happy bunny !!!! ME !  arfur is alive.. the new old starter motor arrived today, and after a bit of messing around with cables and dodgy earths it started spinning on the 12 v battery. than after reminding myself of geos advice for starting sidney, I did the same thinng with the cable from the distributor to the coil, and sparks started to happen. then with help from my daughter and a couple of tubes it started cranking up. now it sucks from the bottle and stays alive really well. I let it run for a while to warm up and have just changed the oil now also. no exhaust on it so sounds like a tractor but frankly even then it sounds smooth and solid vid to follow happy ! |
