Just a quick compression test first.

I will take off the rocker cover and re-tighten the head bolts (loosen and torque back up) and I will also re-adjust the valve clearances now it has run a while.

As I mentioned - I am just being paranoid as it is my first full engine rebuild.

I hope you drain the coolant first or will fill the cylinders!!!!

Right, I warmed the engine up and took the rocker cover off.

I unscrewed each head bolt (in order) a tiny bit and then re-torqued them a little tighter in turn (not all together). Before I did this I saw some leakage from the rear of Cylinder 4. I have heard the modern head gaskets require more torque than the original spec. So with a warm head I torqued them about 15Nm more.

I also checked the valve clearances again, with a warm engine. found two to be slightly out including valve 2 (cylinder 1 and valve 7 (Cylinder 4).

Retested the compression.

Cylinder 1 - 9.2 bar (previous 8.8)
Cylinder 2 - 9.3 bar (previous 9.2)
Cylinder 3 - 9.1 bar (previous 9.0)
Cylinder 4 - 9.0 bar (previous 8.0)

So the head may not have been fully tightened to begin with (although tightened just above spec).

I also checked for water in the oil (before any adjustments) using the splatter test (yes I have been up all night study You Tube videos  ) and with heating the oil in a jam jar lid, if the oil just smokes it is fine but if it splatters i.e. the water boiling off, then it has water in it. I have some water in the oil. So I will run it again and drive for another 50km or so and then replace the oil. By that time my CO2 tester will have arrived and I will be able to check again for any leakages (in this case combustable gases in the coolant).

What's the new project, Ian? The ad's been taken down so I can't see it (although I'm guessing it's a 4cv...).

No new projects for now - Lewis (my son) can't do the 4L Trophy now as university will not give the time off for his navigator(girlfriend) so it looks like 2017 for them (people in France are students until they are 26... )

So as this was just up the road (less than 2 km) I just had to take a look. Again, silly offer made and he accepted it straight away. I will get it running, oil changes, water, fuel, check the brakes and get it CT'ed straight away and just drive it about for now. Just getting the CT will add about €1500 to the price :D But I do like these little cars

But then while we were there he was selling an Austin Mini 1000 from 1984. Bodywork and engine are perfect. Just has not got the time to look after it as his is renovating a barn and house (he lives in Toulouse and this is the weekend house). So I got my Lewis interested and just mentioned it to the guy and he went from €3500 straight to €2000 and in France that is an utter steal the condition it is in plus for Lewis who is 22 the insurance will be €130 per year and no car Tax. So Lewis will look on Sunday and probably take it. He will sell his current mini 1000 and I will sell the 4L he is using at the moment and I will also sell the Turbo Dyane (if anyone is interested). And that will be it for us for a while.

The quicker I get on my bike the better

Getting back to the Traction - I found the issue with the front brake. The slave had popped a seal and squirted brake fluid inside the drum. I cleaned it all up and reset the slave and all was fine - until this morning when it must have popped again as my braking pulled off to the right.

This is the slave closest to the master cylinder so I assume has the most pressure. But these are new seals and rubbers so a little annoyed - I will have to strip it out and get a new regard kit and give it another go.

(meanwhile the 4CV head is off and I found a seized cam follower... all fixed and just waiting for new gaskets to arrive)

All wheel cylindres have the same pressure. Distance doesn't matter. It must pass your brake shoes instead of pushing against them. Is it the right size of caliper? The same as on the other side?

Yes, they are all the original ones.

I have been advised the aftermarket refurb kits are not the greatest so looking for an alternative.

the new dust covers are often to thick and hard. The harder rubber pulls the calipers out of the cylinders. The original rubbers are much softer.
