That seems expensive for a secondhand Smart turbo.

I had a Smart a few years ago and the complete manifold and turbo was replaced by Smart for not a lot more.

The Turbo I have is exactly like the one now sold in Burton. Without the exhaust it revs like the You Tube video of Burtons turbo.

In the weekend I will take some measurments at the Smart turbo just to compare.

The first Smart manifold I had, I cut into pieces the smallest exhaust diameter inside the turbo was about half an inch in diameter!!!!!!!! Just to get the airspeed up before it hits the turbowheel......

I have ordered a boost gauge to see exactly when it comes in - all I know at the moment is the knock starts around 4000rpm

Oke then we wait for the gauge...........

You can bring the ignition back a little, then it can make more boost before it starts to pink,

you can also adjust your wastgate (for now) maybee it is making to much boost already...

Or you can richen your fuel-mixture it helps also against pinking, air to fuel-ratio needs to be
around 1 to 12.5 under boost. Normaly 1 to 14.7 (fully burned fuel) 1 to 15/17 when cruising along.
You need a lambda probe with a gauge too, (I couldn't (properly) do without it)

Turbo mark 2
Tried all day to get turbo to pull more than 4000rpm - many different carbs- tried original Solex on suck but it would not run, tried my Amals from old Via engine - no way and a Bing carb of a BMW motorcycle - bit better. Even tried with no exhaust attached to the turbo - sorry village for the noise. Tried them all on the same piece of road. So time for plan B - stipped off everything that needed to come off and replaced original carb in normal place. Give the car a run and pulls like it used to (no surprise there) and linked the turbo to the inlet - so now blow though - as soon as boost comes on - around 2500rpm (I can now hear the turbo for the first time) the car dies - no surprise as fuel being pushed back (time for new electric petrol pump etc). Can have intercooler etc also - more fun.....

I think the problem with original idea was because turbo is so small it could not pull the heavy petrol and air mixture. Now pulling just air the thing is spinning faster and you can hear it on changes etc (even with bad fuelling)

Mark 3 version

Using one of my old 28mm Amal carbs (sealed) I have made a new manifold to fit to existing flange. Set carb up using all the jets I have to run fine - actually better than old Solex ( small steep hill near my house after junction - old Solex struggle up in second - sometimes down to first- Amal up in second and still pulling). I will use pilot tube in air stream and connect to carb vent to keep mixture correct when boost works (when turbo connected) also intend to build slim intercooler to go down infront of fan.

Time to relax and food

Finally boost pressure gauge arrived (still awaiting high pressure fuel pump and regulator). Decided to do quick test this morning and gave car a quick rev under boost (until fuel starvation) and the turbo now in blow though position is giving 0.1bar @ 2500rpm up to 0.5bar at around 5000rpm. Happy with that.... :)

0.5 bar is fine... a Cx turbo doesn't do more.........

Mine runs with 0.8 bar for daily uses, I think thats about max without destroying your (standard) engin on longtime use.......

Do you have an extra external oilcooler... you should, oil will get very hot!!!!
