Thanks for your replies. I'll have a go with the soldering iron.

One other question: should the float move up and down freely? The one on my gauge seems rather stiff.

Put some petrol on it and see if that frees it. :)

The part where the contact slides up and down inside might be a bit oxydized after a long period of non use i had that too.

Smiffy,
the 'wiper' which moves over the windings of the rheostat may be worn, as in the photograph below.
A repair can be carried out with a blob of solder, as long as it's not too late and it's damaged the windings...

Thanks for that tip, Ken.
Checked the "wiper" and it looks fine.
Soldered the broken strip. Job's a goodun!

Started tidying up the van's metal petrol tank today. The fuel gauge looks OK, but the inside of the tank looks a bit rusty above the halfway point.

Is there a way to de-rust the tank's insides?

Probably, if there is flakey stuff inside, chuck some nuts in(count 'em in and out ;) ) and cocktail shake it, rinse and fit an in line fuel filter. :) .

How detrimental would it be to shake some sharp sand around inside!
