I went and bought this back in October/November with the intention of getting it on the road reasonably quickly. First job was to strip down a doner car, which I've done. But now I'm wondering whether a quick job is best.

It's left hand drive, 1976, with its original 435 engine and drummer gearbox. Mechanically it's OK, but scruffy. Bit of rust just behind the bonnet hinge, and some rust on one of the gutters, but nothing too bad. The sills are good. The chassis is great. The body is remarkably sturdy, if a little lumpy and bumpy.

My original intention was to stick a 602 engine and disk brake gearbox in, and then get driving... but recently I've been thinking (dangerous, I know). Should I leave as is? Should I convert to RHD? Should I add a second demister? Should I replace the engine and gearbox?

For a bit of fun, I'd like to ask: what would YOU do? And why?

If it were me,I would keep it original.Yes it will be slow,yes,people will say put in an M28,but part of the fun of owning these vehicles is to drive them as they were.I am sure alot of you will disagree,but each to his own ;)

Chop the floors out and stick a bmw engine in it.
Or make it really usuable 602 and rhd.

If its fairly original I'd keep it that way tbh
I know if no one messed we'd end up all with the Sam machines but I geuss there aren't many solid vans availbke

Stick with the 435 they sound gorgeous. I don't understand why people bin drum brake boxes, a well set up drummer will stop just as quick as a disk brake car

That's probably because the relatively 'short stroke' 435cc engine is designed to rev out to 6,750 rpm, whereas the 602cc versions won't be happy if you try that too often.

Also, drummer handbrakes, of either 200mm or 220mm diameter, can make the *disc* brake version seem rather feeble... ;)

I agry!
I would keep it original . There are not many of these left .
And I don't understand people who want to "improve"those vehicles. These are relics of their time, just keep it as it is!
