I agree AM is the cast mark for an Ami engine. That's an M28 so would have to be an Ami 8 engine, however with external oil filter though - when did they come in, 78-80?

M28 or M28/1 engine from 1970 onwards, so could also be from a Dyane, AK or even a Mehari?
Ditto for the 'large drum' gearbox.

Someone has butchered the 435 heat exchangers to 'fit' onto the 602 engine, probably the same story with the 435 crossbox. :(

Hmm. Ah well. Shame it's not the 435 I thought it was, but this van has obviously led a pretty full life - I'm not surprised that the engine isn't as it was when it left the factory.

I've been asked to bag some photos of the engine to show how heat exchangers were modded etc. I'll take some at the weekend and post them up. In the meantime, here's the only shot I have so far that gives a clue... and from the look of things all you need is a pair of tin snips!

Late 60's I would say, as my 1968 Ami 6 Club has the original M28 35HP engine...

Tom,
November 1970 was when the external oil filter first appeared... ;)

Had a look at my trusty index.

AM is the code for an M4 from 6/61 - 9/67

The AM2 (oil filter less M28) was used on Ami 6s from 5/68 - 7/69 and then in Ami 8s throughout production (3/69-9/79)

There's also an AM2a that was used in Acadianes.

So that's all very interesting, but not sure it's really helpful!

Regarding Tom's Ami 6 - the 35hp rating was introduced with the AM2 on the Ami 6 in 5/68.
