Post D*lly Folly
Hello and welcome to all !

This is the start of a new thread featuring a full re-build.

There is loads I like about this forum…. the banter, fun, pics, “horse trading”, technical stuff and just plain old humour, and whilst its not a club with membership, it certainly feels like a community. So time to share this with you all.

For me however, I find the threads, in this place, showing “blokes at home (not excluding any female re-builders….are there any ?)” stripping down their cars and re-building them just so inspirational. I wont name names as there are so many cars that have been through this process here, and its just fantastic. This therefore is the start of my own attempt and I hope it encourages others to do the same and also hope you all kick me in the right direction and help me to keep going!

Firstly some background ….

I want to declare from this very start point that I am not a mechanic. I have never been trained in any motor industry skills, never been involved in the trade and whilst I am very handy and have made a living doing building work and house restoration, I am essentially a musician by trade…. I play “Squeezebox” for a Morris Dancing side

http://www.mishmashmorris.org.uk/

…….yep ….I admit it……that’s me playing squeezebox….(someone has to do it and the beer is good)

I am actually really an ex-trombone player by “trade”.

However I have owned and driven 2CVs and their kin for 24 years now and in fact still have my original Jade Y reg special, awaiting a restoration (if this goes well, it could be next). In this time I have owned far too many A series to remember. I have re-chassied at least 5 cars in the past and kept them going mainly on my own. However I tend to just do what needs doing and drive them, not total “sheds”, but just get them up running, safe and reliable, then drive em…..tatty maybe, practical and fun …defiantly!

The point is, I feel its time to have an attempt at making one a bit smarter and better....in fact really as good as I can. Put some real time and effort into it and see what I can produce, to the best of my ability and not just a daily hack. Mrs Squeeze is a piano teacher and drives around in the evenings teaching, she would love to do it in a 2CV but hates the wrecks I tend to have or offer her!

“Sort me out a really smart 2CV, that I can enjoy as my own car and be proud and happy driving, that’s all I ask and I will be happy to drive it every day”.

….so that’s my challenge !!

So here’s to the start of a new re-build thread…..please accept my limitations as a restorer…but on that basis, PLEASE…do not hesitate to correct me on anything, offer advice or feel that I wont accept any criticism...I will...be happy for both. I am open to all encouragement, all comments and above all hope this is a learning experience for me that can be shared with all of you …and the result is one very neat and tidy sorted 2CV that lives on in glory!

Finally, I will do my best with posts and updates. The project is one thing, but trying to be interesting and informative here and provide an account of what I am doing and “entertainment” for you lot is another! Some of the other threads showing re-builds are just amazing. I cant promise a time scale, or quality of re-build, nor can I offer the wit, humour and additional quirks and takes on life that others have so brilliantly done. This is the start of a journey, please all chip in as and when you want to….I don’t mind it drifting or going silly at times !

Right that’s the background….

Off now to post pics of the car at the start and will post them next !

PS - I am based in Eastbourne, anyone ever want to pop by and have a cuppa, cake or general chat during this project is most defiantly welcome. PM me.

Right then…..over to the car !

As you can see I have a few of these things and the two Jade ones are set aside for the moment. The Bamboo is my daily driver and therefore I had to go for one of them and the Plums and Custard might just be the subject of an idea I have….(something for another time)

….thus I need to introduce you too …

G699 PFG A Red and White D*lly from 1989. I have owned it since 2002 and prior to that it had only one former owner. The mileage is 25188…genuine total miles from new. I have the MOTs and service history and knew the guy who owned it.

A genuine one owner low mileage car !!!

He was a naval officer and brought the car from new and drove it only locally until having to give up driving because of eyesight problems. I brought it from him and drove it as it was for many years and then its been on SORN for some time. Time to get it up and going again.

I have to say that the “D*lly” isn’t my choice of 2CV…..frankly I don’t like them much. I prefer the standard colours of the specials or other colours….and always drawn to a Charleston……so….it may stay Red and White….or it might drastically change into something else!!

First things first and assess what this project is about

I look forward to seeing it. I must make the effort to pop down and see you and maybe lend a hand at some point.

I feel there may be a connection between D*lly ownership and poor eyesight, but I won't delve into it.

Good on yer.

I reckon starting a thread is a cracking idea.
I've found that the encouragement on here has been a massive help to me along the way.

How bad is the D*lly? The back sweeps and windscreen surround look fairly good from those pics. If they are then that's a good couple of weeks of spare time saved. ;)

I have a cataract in one eye, the jaunty mix of colours helps me find the D*lly in a car park

Squeezebox I'm happy to lend my lack of mechanical expertise anytime.
