The wear to those knife edges is almost unbelievable! I replaced them as my originals were damaged. My new ones don't have those rough milling marks so fingers crossed they're not the same. I'll keep an eye on them and in the meantime try to find some originals. I think maybe 2 of my old ones are ok.

Louis, please elaborate on your comment..

Peter,
looks as though the fellow with the tub of grease and a paintbrush in the Mangualde factory was in a good mood the day your rolling chassis was put together, as there's a bit more grease around the bearings than many I've seen.
Still not as much as I put on them, since I hate changing (rear) axle bearings with the body attached to the chassis.

A couple of passing comments, albeit a bit late in the day...
It's not necessary to disconnect the track rods in order to remove the front arms from the axle, moving the steering rack towards the side that you're working on will give enough slack to ease the arm outwards, inspect the bearing and slap some grease on it if required. ;)
Regarding the nuts securing the dampers, they shouldn't be torqued up until the car is built up and sitting on its wheels at the correct ride height, so that the rubber bushes in the damper eyes are in their 'neutral' position.
This applies mostly to the ends of the dampers nearest to the suspension arms, since they have the largest arc of movement, less for the inner ends.

Pete, AFAIK Monroes are the best available for a road car these days since the Lip production ceased (sad days). I put a full set on the Mehari I rebuilt for my dad and it ran fine. My acad had a full set of monroes for years and ran fine too.

Any shock is better than no shock.

Martyn,
guess you haven't tried KYB dampers yet?
They really are 'shocking'...

Nice one.
A word of advice.
Don't compress them until you've removed the plastic cover sleeves to check for any pitting or other corrosion damage on the exposed sections of the pushrods.
( About 1/8 turn of the sleeve relative to its mounting should unclip it, then it can be pulled clear over the damper body.)
It only takes one or two passes through the end seal of a rusted rod to damage the seal and a leak to start...
That's why I keep the exposed sections of the rods greased.
