That's what I'm using next on bare steel instead of etch prime. They reckon it adhere's six times better than etch primer, and is as tough as it gets. Even if the top coat chips it won't breach the primer and so no rust.

Anything you ask a pro to do will be expensive, unless you have a deal going on between you.

Quick question: do you brush on the epoxy primer, or spray? I'm guessing spray (which would be a pest to me, cos I don't have spray equipment) but hoping brush!

Many epoxy primers are a two pack and they contain iso cyanates so you have to be very careful with them, you don't want that stuff in your lungs! I see the one ON posted up says it is isocyanate free so its a good home use choice. I've not used the stuff ON posted up but I've used a few, I like the Selemix version as you can have it tinted.

The epoxy prinmers I've used are all non sand, and need overcoating within 24 hours. I like to give the epoxy primer a contrasting colour to the sanding primer I use over the top of it. That way when you rub that down you get a visual warning when the filling primer is getting thin. If you want a good finish really it needs to be sprayed.

You can brush it on Smiffy, I just prefer to spray. I chose that one as it's iso-free. They are very tough paints which isolate the metal from the atmosphere and thus from the preconditions for rust. Just make sure it goes on over bone dry metal or you'll trap in moisture. As 250 says you need to overpaint the ordinary 2 pack ones within 24 hours to aid crosslinking, not so this stuff though.

It gives you the opportunity to leave things in primer without absorbing moisture. Get it in black and think of it as a sealer. Any subsequent primer coats can then be seen.

250 what's that selemix stuff like? is it toxic? I'm looking for something durable for a motorcycle frame.

I'll be doing all the priming and painting myself. In two pack!

So, it's been nice knowing you all! ;)

You can hire all the proper breathing gear for about 150 quid a week so, I reckon that's probably not a bad idea. Although I did paint my AKS400 and my old Dyane with two pack and the old "deep breath" technique and I'm still here.........

spanners,
problem is, it's not just you who may be affected if you're working in a built up area...

About 300 metres from where I live, there was a business specialising in tarting up VW camper vans.
After they'd done a runner, leaving unpaid rent and a succession of angry customers wandering around asking if anyone had seen which direction their van had disappeared, it transpired that one of their dodgy practices involved spraying 2K paint in the open air... :(

ken.

It is funny stuff, when it is applied it looks like you've put on a coat of thin plastic. It's a translucent coat. According to the data sheet it can be painted with a mask 8in well ventilated conditions, full airfed mask when there is restricted ventilation.

https://buyat.ppg.com/Refinish_SSA/MSDS ... dCode=RSEL

I didn't paint it myself, nowadays I tend to do all the prep and send stuff out to have the actual paint applied. All these type of materials are toxic. Like all these sort of materials it isn't something to take liberties with, it is much the same story with the Rust buster product.

There are non air fed masks that are suitable for 2 pack. My understanding is that the reason air fed tends to be insisted on is not because you can't filter 2K paint with a mask, it is because you can't smell isocyanates. Air fed doesn't rely on people changing the filters. 3M's 6000 series mask will filter 2K paint, but it can only be used where there is a proper system in place to log the age and replacement of masks.

People get all hung up on isocyanates, and I'm not at all saying they don't carry a significant risk, but there are other things in some paints that are far scarier yet people tend to blithely ignore them.

This isn't intended as a "2K paint is fluffy and friendly really" rather it is a have a serious look at the safety data sheet for every product you apply with a spray gun. Just because it is isocyanate free doesn't make it benign.

I have only my garage which is right next to my neighbours house so I can't do 2-pack. I'd chance it otherwise. Wonder when he's going on holiday?
