Good work there, however it's our local club night later this week and I'm probably going to be having a few words with the author of the article which recommended using your middle finger as a substitute for a torque wrench.

Here's an approach with more of a basis in engineering practice, which suggests that 'two turns from finger tight' is about right when tightening rocker cover nuts...

1 turn of the nut gives 2.6 Nm, 0.25 kgf m by slcchassis, on Flickr

p.s. Just noticed in your photographs that the clip which retains the fuel pipe where it passes over the nearside chassis leg is upside down.

Thanks Ken. The torque wrench I used is both new and well received from what I could gather so should be fairly accurate. So just to clarify is the middle finger technique ill advised? Should I re-torque it?

Finger tight isn't very objective to begin with.
I always turned them down as hard as i could with my fingers, then finished it with 3/4 turn with a spanner.
This has always worked for me, but for a small girl with an office job, and not doing any sports, it won't work for sure.

Ah fair play. I suppose the torque wrench is pretty universal!

Righto, so it would appear that I have quite a busy few weeks and so does my car. I am planning on taking it to Wales for a few days and then a mini road trip around Europe taking in about 4 countries and about 2000 miles so my primary task is to sort out the cigarette socket or rather lack of.


I found this thread http://www.2cvgb.co.uk/forum/showthread.php?t=9791 particularly useful for all round advice. So I took it all in, ordered the bits I needed online and drafted my brother in for technical support and creative inspiration and set to it.


The first problem was where we going to mount it. I wanted something that could be easily removed but didn’t need to drill or cut about the car at the same time. An Idea I had was to make a mini panel and mount it behind the ignition barrel





or even further back in the panel to the right of the gear lever.





My brother came up with removing the internals of the ash tray and installing it there with a small hole at the bottom for the wires as well the other alternative of simply putting it behind the vent panel up in the dash.





In the end my brother came up with something far more basic as he was moving stuff of the front parcel shelf, use an old cinnamon mint tin and mount it under the shelf using one the hole for the speedo cable.





Perfect! So we had found something if a little unorthodox so we set about cutting it to mount the socket. Unfortunately we didn’t have a drill bit the right size so we used a 6.5mm or so and various metal files to achieve the same thing in the end though, we got there!








The keen eyed among you will noticed it is mounted to the left. This is because if I ever decide to fit another socket I can do, hence the centre punch mark at the bottom left of the ‘y’ that’s the same distance top to bottom and side to side as the other.





we then drilled a small hole and screwed it to the underside of the parcel shelf with a single stainless m5 screw headed bolt, large washer and nut. The box section under the shelf will help to keep it from moving about too much.


Next we moved onto wiring the light on the cigarette lighter which was a bit fiddly. First we crimped a small ring connector and attached it to the mauve ‘sidelight’ wire on the light switch (top right screw in pic).





Next we fed the wire with all the other switch wires, through the sleeve into the dash. We took off the headlight switch and removed the instrument panel to make this easier. Then fed it out the same hole as the speedo cable, along the top of the parcel shelf and to the light.








Finally we could wire the power part up. I used 17.5A wire with a 15A fuse which was mounted under the shelf.





The wire then followed the speedo cable up before meeting the light wire for the socket and ran alongside to the socket. The earth for both light and power were connected to the mount for the tin and the positive wire for the power attached to the positive terminal of the battery in the engine bay using a ring connector. The back of the socket used female blade connectors and we soldered the wiring for the fuse.





Job done! I can now run my satnav, cool box etc. with any problems.

I had my little excursion to Wales the weekend before last. Because I had to be back earlier than my dad, I drove the 2cv whilst he drove on in front in his Citroen C8 along with my brother. It was the first time I had the car on the motorway which was interesting but once I got the hang of slipstreaming it was not too bad if a little slower than my C1. Still many hours and two fill ups later I made it to Wales where I endured several days of glorious Welsh sporadic rain spells and steep hills. As we had three cars between us by the time we met up with my aunt. So it didn't get a great deal of use but in a way I was glad as the belt up wrought havoc to my oil consumption.


One drive I did do though was up to Mt Snowdon and true to form, it was raining. The car coped well though. With four up and a dog, going up steep hills it wasn’t orderly taxing for it. Except mid way up when it decided to ‘have to break’ so we left it for a bit and I took some pictures.











After a 10 minutes we got back in the car and continued driving without any other niggles.


We also visited Conwy. Home to the smallest house in Great Britain, apparently.





Turns out it wasn’t the only thing in the town that was red. As we were walking about the city, we spotted this beauty laid up on a driveway.
