Ben,
relocate the spring attachment point on the carburettor from where Citroen had it and instead attach it to the clevis pin for the throttle cable.
You need to fit the spring with the longer 'hook' at the carb end and also fit a tie wrap between the other end and that wire clip on the fan cowling, with the side benefit that the tie wrap can be used to adjust the spring tension.

Will post a picture a bit later if this isn't clear...

So car now starts perkily, engine quieter and smoother. But, like disturbing a pharaoh’s tomb there is a curse. My carburettor is now arsing about. The spring on the throttle linkage is slack so there is some sticking going on. The engine now put-took-put-put-tooking, especially on over run. So old spare unknown carb is going to be cleaned up and swapped over to see what happens.

Anyway, much learnt yesterday for future reference. You can’t beat watching someone do a tricky job to learn what goes where. It is like a Haynes Manual virtual reality.

This is the two springs on the carb that have gone, the left one seems to be the most important. This is a pic of my spare carb, unfortunately the right spring is broken on this one too. ECAS look like they do replacement springs, I'll get some ordered.

This link gives an insight into carburetor problems you seem to have,in respect of the flap springs.
Hope it is of some help/use.

What job is the outer spring supposed to do?

Ben,
the outer spring acts on the primary spindle & butterfly, so it is working in parallel with the throttle return spring connected to the fan cowling.

The inner controls a lever which is mounted on the primary spindle and starts opening the secondary barrel when the primary has opened most of the way...

In order to remove my carburettor to fit the new springs, I needed to make a special tool. Sean recommended a method of constructing this in a previous thread (thanks Sean).

I have purchased a cheap set of combination spanners from local pound style shop. I selected the 12mm spanner, popped it in the workbench, heated spanner as the point of desired bend with a blow torch (£6 from Lidl), then manipulated bend with pliers to get the angle (90ish degrees).

Next I have filed the edge of the ring spanner so it will fit in a tight gap. I have got three bolts off so far, one to go, just need to file a wee bit more off the spanner.

Your ahead of me there Tim. I'm cleaning down the carb as its caked, then I'll get that spindle off and have a look. Not had any time to go at it yet this week.
