It's not the floor I want to do, at least, I would do but I can't justify the cost. I want to tile the walls around the bench in black and white chequers. When cleaning the engine I flicked some specks of grease on the wall and I want to be able to wipe it off quickly and cleanly, with the brickwork it tends to smear in and doesn't come off easily. I wanted to tile it but wondered if there's a grout which doesn't look filthy straight away.

And suddenly it makes sense, clever idea..

What about a sheet of stainless, or sealed ply on the wall? (Not trying to talk you out of tiling, i like the idea but i like quick ideas more)

I put up sheets of wood - but I like the stainless idea too, maybe with a cushion sheet behind.

A stainless or galvanised splashback would be good. Failing that, how about a bit of your floor paint on the wall?

Perfect - use a good grey cement grout no problems

I have window glass behind the kitchensink at the wall, it is very easy to clean... however throwing a engine at the glass wouldn't be a good idea..

But I think (stainless) steel is easier to obtain for you anyway...

Stainless would be great, but have you seen the cost of it?

I have. My bench is stainless but like everything else I didn't pay for it. I don't think there's any more behind the metal rack at work (where I find many things which need reappropriating). I wanted something a little 'warmer' than metal, I want 'clean' without looking like a butchers shop (whilst I can see an irony there). Tiling it seemed to be the most pleasant solution. If that grout will wipe clean reasonably easily I'll have a stab at it. I've only tiled a kitchen before and I didn't enjoy it but maybe being a little more experienced I might do better this time.

I know stainless would be expensive, but you could use 306 stainless as apposed to 316 which would reduce the cost somewhat

Do post some pics of it tiled btw!!
