it lifts the barrel away from the crank so that the piston ring wont hit the wear ridge at TDC

Yes, that what I mean. I am doing that on old engines when I am not replacing cylinders.

The tin with RX 10 fell on the floor so I spilled quite a bit . :twisted:

The sales-bloke of the company I bought the seals from told me the writing should be towards the engine! :oops:
I thought it was odd,so I asked twice , but he persisted in this. :!:
So that means I have to take the engine apart again??

My understanding is that oil seals should be fitted with the spring side facing toward the pressure, in other words the writing on the outside. I have only ever heard of them being fitted the other way on an extremely unusual 1950s german motor scooter on the crank for some strange reason which escape me.
If it is wrong though, and someone clever confirms it for you, that seal looks like it could be hooked out with a little watch makers' type screwdriver or something and replaced :?:
