I reckon it's about time for an update. Putting this poor thing back together has been pretty time consuming but really enjoyable. I've been cleaning absolutely everything before putting it back. In fact I had a thoroughly entertaining afternoon or two cleaning the wiring loom with brake cleaner and thinners before putting it back. Oh the hours just fly by. I put the new vent flap on followed by the wiper mechanism (with new spindles and a freshly powder coated frame) and things looked much more complete from the front. I spent a good day or so putting the dashboard back in and trimming the bulkhead. The dash panel itself was powder coated in gloss black as were the heater vents. I'm not happy with that steering wheel though. I much prefer the single spoke ones and they seem to weather much better. I'll have to try and get hold of one. I had a spare CD player hanging about in the garage so I put that in along with some speakers in the footwells. The mountings for these took forever to make but I'm quite pleased with them now they're finished. I added an extra fuse to the fuse box specifically for the CD player and wired it with green wire so it looks original. I can't fault the headlining trim stuff I got from Matts Soft Tops. It fitted perfectly and looks great. I stuck it in place with some high temperature spray glue. So that's pretty much as far as I've got. Next job is to start preparing the panels for paint. I've sorted four acceptable doors that have good bottoms and not too many dents. I've just come in from grit blasting some of the rusty bits. Thankfully this didn't expose many holes. Nothing that can't be carefully welded up with a bit of luck. Back in the garage tomorrow night hopefully. I'll have to crack on with these panels and have them ready for the splendid warm and sunny painting weather that is obviously just around the corner.

Thanks very much chaps. The encouragement is very welcome. The VW is mine I'm afraid. I've had it for over 18 years now and will probably keep it forever. It hardly ever gets used though. It's unreliable, uncomfortable and uneconomical but it's amusingly quick, it makes a great noise, and I love it.

I noticed that as well when the characters I worked with used to spray chassis indoors with less than adequate ventilation. The headaches in the evenings weren't too bright, though.
