Post Re: 1988 2cv D*lly bits and bobs
So after some deliberation, I'm going to take te body off the chassis.. Roll it over and give the underside a good going over. Scrape all the old wax oyl off and start again. See what needs doing.

I don't think my car is doing any good sitting in the garage at home. I'm literally 5 metres from the sea, and the garage is very warm...

Ive got a lockup 3 miles away which is also 3 miles away from the sea; so it should be better for the car...

So I'm going to take the car to my lockup take the body off and then leave the chassis and body panels in the lockup and bring the body back home for some fettling.

I would like to get it all solid, back to the paint, get the paint good and then paint some high zinc paint followed by stone chip

Would galvofroid be ok? Ie welded up a boat trailer a month ago, (that a weld failed by original manufacturer and painted that on and a month later after many drippings in the sea it's still good

I also have a big pot of it by co incidence..!!

I'm going to do all this by myself and I think it'll be a good chance to learn more....!!!!!

Good on you James. Get stuck in. Have you welded such thin steel?

No only thick steel which is why I won't be doing any welding

My mum seems to think that in life you should pay someone else to do such jobs :S
She wanted me to pay someone to do small jobs that I can do easily?!?!

Like scrape wax oyl off..
So I'm not aloud a welder at home as she thinks I'll burn the house and street down...

It's really annoying as I'd love to do all the welding and such myself but if I made a mess or anything at all in the garage here at home then I'd be kicked out like shit of a shovel..

She went ape when I said I'd be putting the shell upside down in the garage to scrape waxoyl off.. Life nearly wasn't worth living...

But after much convincing she approved!!

I keep wanting to say it, so I'll say it... It it ain't fucked, don't fix it?
I could just be lazy, but I couldn't think of owt worse than taking the bodyshell off just to tidy it up a bit. Why don't you wait until it actually is fucked, which somewhere on your car, at sometime in the not too far distant future, it will be, regardless of whether you waxoil it or not?

Because when it is fucked i wont be able to afford to sort it, and my time is free so id rather try and slow it down.. So surely that isnt a false exonomy

And leaving that hole to gather water / shit etc would also not be a clever money saving scheme as the metal and body work all around is as good as new

It also depends what you describe as fucked too.. A hole all the way through the metal in my dictionary is fucked, and needs repairing.. And i have a hole all the way through

I may be asking for trouble but id like to do some work on it anyway

Preventative maintenance is a great idea, it far easier to repaint the floor a couple of times than it is to weld new floors in. Unfortunately I don't always practice what I preach, and you wouldn't catch me taking the shell off until I really had no choice.

I wasn't criticising the idea, far from it, if you've got the time and the inclination then from the car's point of view it possibly is the best way to go about it. It's just that I certainly couldn't be arsed.
