If it helps drag it back to the topic of Sams 350, we took it to the nuclear sub for a pint earlier. It got us there and back. Then I spent all afternoon cutting bits of the chassis off and welding them back on again.

I'm hoping this isn't the beginning of a trend where shirt journeys end in welding...

Pics to follow

I may be wrong but, from my experience, you won't be swapping your old mirror for a "dipping" one as the mountings are differently spaced in older cars and vans......... :ugeek:

Weirdly it fitted fine - I suspect the van might have a later windscreen surround?

Almost certainly, given how heavy the body resto was, back in the early '90s.

So what got chopped/welded? Was it that damper mount?

Yeah it was. Russ has done a superb job of sorting it though.

Image

The only real way to get the stuck stud out was to get the shock mount off the chassis. Russ used a 6' grinder to slice the mount from the chassis bracket and a 4" one to cut the top of the U shape mount (pictures will make more sense)

Leaving this:

As soon as the mount was placed in a proper drill the remains of the stud came out no propblem. Russ turned it into a grub screw to clean the thread too

Some grinding to get the wekd smooth

and welded and painted back in position :)

I'm really grateful for Russ' help with this - I'd have been drilling away for hours on end otherwise.

I serviced the front tie rods this afternoon. They weren't tight at all. Weirdly the right hand side needed a lot of adjustment to get it level with the left. I've lowered the front a little but it needs further adjustment.

Nothing seemed too worn which was good.
