Yes something like that, the only real reason for doing it is that each wheel can move independintly because the can is'nt there to drag it back and forth.

Why have you left the rubber donuts in there? It just acts instead of the spring, like a wanky old mini. I did mine like that ages ago and it was shite. You need to find a way of keeping the springs straight, by mounting them like they dont pull straight and the tie rods wear through on the threaded tube thing.
You can avoid it by machining some replacements for the donuts from steel or ally and refitting the cans. That will keep the springs straight, stop the rods wearing through and remove the interlinked action of the suspension. If you want to do it with split cans like that for ease of getting at and fannying about with, then replace the donuts with steel, weld it to the threaded tube (making sure it's dead straight) and refit enough can to cover the springs, welding that to the steel you've replaced the donuts with. Basically making one piece half-cans solid with the threaded tubes which are bolted solid to the chassis.
