3. Next job was to get rid of the weild on the spring can so that it could be cut open, the blue can was 130% the normal can is a standerd can.

now it was cut open the springs came out.

this is the part of the can wich will be used again.

we did the same to the standered can.

4. Now to put the new springs on without the cans.

A bit sloppy but its not finished yet, next weekend we will either drill through the blue nylon and wire it all together of weild the springs together.

Definitely not, mate.

So what's the plan with the springs? 4x4-style exposed, using the heavier-rated coils?

Yes something like that, the only real reason for doing it is that each wheel can move independintly because the can is'nt there to drag it back and forth.

Be even easier to achieve that by just fitting the can so badly it can't move... <grin>

Why have you left the rubber donuts in there? It just acts instead of the spring, like a wanky old mini. I did mine like that ages ago and it was shite. You need to find a way of keeping the springs straight, by mounting them like they dont pull straight and the tie rods wear through on the threaded tube thing.

You can avoid it by machining some replacements for the donuts from steel or ally and refitting the cans. That will keep the springs straight, stop the rods wearing through and remove the interlinked action of the suspension. If you want to do it with split cans like that for ease of getting at and fannying about with, then replace the donuts with steel, weld it to the threaded tube (making sure it's dead straight) and refit enough can to cover the springs, welding that to the steel you've replaced the donuts with. Basically making one piece half-cans solid with the threaded tubes which are bolted solid to the chassis.
