When I first got the Ami, it had no bumpers. I got hold of a pair, and fitted them. Shortly after, somebody went into the back in traffic and mashed the rear bumper. No damage to body or chassis.

That's funny! Although the proportions are wrong for it to be accurate.

 Re: Belinda: on the road
I haven't done a lot this week due to shifts at work but I have managed to get some hinges made up and the bonnet on. The lift off hinges I got were weldable but seeing as the parts to which they would be attaching to aren't metal I had to fabricate something which I could fix with screws or nuts & bolts. Looking at pics of other Bedouins, it appeared that the 2 hinges faced the same way so that the bonnet could lift off easily and as it seemed to be a good idea to be able to remove a forward hinged bonnet for ease of access, I thought I'd do the same. At first I thought the gap at the front looks too big, but looking from the side, there is a ledge that the rear of the bonnet sits on so that the gap is pretty much uniform all the way round. I don't think there'll be any problems with bonnet security as I already have rubber catches with which to secure it.

 Re: Belinda: on the road
I meant to post an update at the weekend but didn't get round to it so here goes. I intended finishing off the front end at the end of last week but the chav brigade were in the garage and I couldn't get the car inside so I started to look at the doors, the job I'd intended to do next anyway. As can be seen, the metal door frame is starting to hole along the bottom edge. It isn't bad but still needs to be sorted. I intially thought I could get away with chopping out a couple of sections on the outside but it soon became apparant that the metal adjacent to the outer wood skin was holed as well so the decision was made just to remove the wood and replace that with new material as I'd only have to do it at a later date anyway. The exterior ply outer skin is fixed to the metal frame with countersunk pop rivets which shouldn't be too hard to replace and while it's off it'll be a lot easier for me to sort out some proper wing mirror fixing points, something else that I'd been putting off. Anyway, with the ply skin off, replacement of the bottom section was a simple matter of chopping out the bottom section and welding in some suitable square tubular metal, although I was careful to temporarily tack weld on a piece of scrap to ensure that the door edges didn't move.

Plywood and box section! I can't help thinking those Bedouins look damn easy to fix compared to 'proper cars'.
