A little back story...

Sam says he's the 12th owner. He's not. He's the 13th... It's 12 _previous_... <grin> Even better, 11 of those were between it being UK registered in 1990, and us buying it in early '97.

As with most of my fleet, Hetty's been shamefully underused, spending most of her time with us sitting around waiting for relatively minor odds'n'sods to be sorted. It's great to see her go to somebody with the enthusiasm to get her back on the road and to events.

Most of those owners were before she was (heavily) restored in the early '90s. Since then, she's been through a few owners, and the history's pretty much known. As Sam says, the identity is questionable - '69 chassis plate, but the van is "right" for a few months in '66. 12v, alternator, old gearbox, banjo brakes, M4 engine.

As for the name... Many moons ago, she was apparently known as "Henry". Clearly, she's not a bloke. So, at some stage, it got changed to "Henrietta". When she came to us, we thought that FAR too posh, so she quickly became "Hetty".

Yeah, I think we pinned down the 'true' build date as between July '66 (start of 12v electrics), and October '67 ('modern' gearbox).

Tim Cottingham was the owner who christened 'her' Henry - to me, 350s are blokes, I just hope gender confusion doesn't make the poor thing act up...

Stupid question, Sam. Are you colour-blind? It's grey. Very grey.

I removed the desert boudoir hangings, simply as it was harbouring damp and I need to get at the roof.

Yes, I'm rather horrified at what's behind it. Very horrified, tbh. If I'd had the slightest inkling, it'd have been out years ago. The rest of the interior was so good and dry, that I just didn't realise. I'm really quite embarrassed by that. And ashamed.

There's a lot of (designed, not rusted) holes in the rear panel. 2 of the holes are for the number plate, any ideas on the others? Bare in mind the number plate lights are still attached.

I think we'll go with "drilled", rather than "designed"...

Electrics are next... this comes off the back of the alternator...?

Those old alternators have the main feed, the smaller field wire - and a pair of pins for the charge warning light. It's either one of those, or horn, or indicator.

TBH I've never even seen gris sable, it just conjured up grey green connotations. :D

Well this thread is totally blowing my mind. The V5 says grey, my eyes see grey green, I have two different paint codes...

..and anyway it appears she's two different colours!

This is no trick of the light you cans ee the paint line go up towards the window.

AC133 Gris Kandahar or AC513 Vert Cactee :?: :?:
I need to decide what I'm doing in terms of getting paint mixed :?

Lights
Anyway, got the indicators working :)

Image

The canister wires were the wrong way around  But it was a good excersise cleaning all the earths anyway. Can I just say here and now that by far the worst epic design fails on a 2cv are a) ridiculous tent peg battery holers and b) 'teddy bear' indicators.

Who ever though to put indicators where nobody's going to see them with the bulbs facing the wrong way using a rivet to hold an insulator between the live and earth should be shot

The rivet was broken so the earth/insulator/live bulb holder had been glued together with super glue. I faffed for a while and in the end sorted it out by using folded insulation tape to pad between the earth and live bulb holder and strapping it up with mini cable ties. It's neat and it works!

So that's all the lights working :D

Wipers
Did as Ken advised and stationed George to disconnect the power if the motor jammed. There were clunks from the motor so we knew the power was getting to the motor. Dismantled the dash, etc and took the motor out, cleaned it all up and put it back. I encouraged the motor with my finger and of it went :)

then stopped :(

and pushed it to get it going again and of it went :)

and stopped

I noticed that the contact on the rear of the motor where the electrical contacts are was very black, so I got the motor going again and as it went round, held some sandpaper agaist the contacts and sanded all the gunk off :D

Seems to be working great now, think I need new wiper blades though!

Tomorrow we're sorting the brakes!

What are your thoughts on colours then :?:
