 Hand built van
Just saying hi, I'm a new member to the forum and enjoying the posts here.
I am at present building a Van from scratch from steel. I have sawed a 2cv in two and am now constructing the new rear. I intend it to be a Camper for going on Photography trips. The donor car was very rusty so no good stuff was harmed in this project, it did though have a Galv chassis. I will be making all the new steel panels myself and have all the tools I need to do that being a retired Mechanical Engineer.
Wish me luck. James.

Hi James, Welcome here and good luck! It sounds like a really interesting project. Have you owned 2cvs before? What sort of rear end are you going for? 2cv van style or something different? Sorry that's lots of questions!! Keep us updated and stick some pictures up - we like pictures Sam

 Re: Hand built van
Thank you Sam for you quick reply and welcome. I have never owned 2cv before although I have always loved the French machines, especially the DS. I have owned some Yank stuff, a 1957 Caddy and rebuilt a 39 Hudson Coupe from scratch. Those are sold now and I wanted something smaller, I had a list of things I would like to have and the 2cv came up first. I couldn't find a Van so decided to make my own in the style of the 350 or 400. I will post a couple of photos tomorrow and let you see where I'm up to.
James.

James. Can't wait to see some photos, Try to keep it as light as possible, wenn I do (some) metalstuff it always end up being (to) heavy and much to strong. viewtopic.php?f=19&t=2301

 Re: Hand built van
Ipgo, I had a look at your construction, it reminded me a bit like the Forth Rail Bridge. The sheet I'm using is 1.2mm at the lower part and 0.7 on the upper part of the body. The donor car had rust in all the usual places, I took out the windshield and found this. Since the car is pretty agricultural to start with I just made my own repair When I cut the back off, I lost about 60% of the rusty bits. I am using 1.2mm Galv sheet on the bottom parts. The severe winter here in Scotland has stopped work for a while but I'm enjoying myself. James.

 Re: Hand built van
James. I'm using 1.2mm Galv mild steel on the bottom, and 0.7mm galv mild steel on top parts, instead of blowing holes and spatter welding the paper thin Citroen Steel, everything will be rivited. I have a Bead Roller for making the corrugated panels and I'm working from Drawings and photos put up by you guys.
James.

 Re: Hand built van
It always tickles me when people chop bits off as beyond repair that appear better than my 2CV body.
Sounds like a great project though, the best of luck.
