Post Re: My 1974 2CV van
I had problems with my 2CV van recently.
The power was out of the engine. at first I thought it was the carburettor, but it turned out it was still very clean, I did clean all the jets and it seemed to be doing a bit better, but not yet what I was used to.
Finally took the cylinder heads off, my son suspected it could be burnt valves.
‘Valves not adjusted properly ’he said.
Before I took the cylinder heads off I checked the valve clearance, but it was perfect.
The valves were covered with soot, but after cleaning them, they appeared to be in very good condition.
Finally, we went to measure the pistons and cylinders and they showed major wear.
The valve stem guides also had considerable play .
I then ordered new valve stem guides and a set of cylinders with pistons from Der Franzose in Germany.
Since we were taking the engine apart anyway, we also replaced the crankshaft and camshaft, which I had kept in the cupboard for years.
I was able to buy these NOS from a dealer some time ago.
And the result is amazing!
Although I can't pull it all the way through yet, because the engine needs to be run in again, it is a world of difference.
I especially notice it when climbing the hill just before Bonyapuzsta .
That is a very steep hill with a very long climb. In the past, I could only get to the top at 50 Km/h and now I can easily get to 70 km/h, without giving full throttle.
Very pleased !

Still is a lovely little car .
