Just finished preparing my 1975 2cv for it’s winter Hibernation , and also mine , as both of us are no longer spring chickens , indeed get Christmas out the way (bah humbug) and roll on next spring and the first start up , no doubt again after toping up the carb and a certain amount of blue smoke as I run it for it’s last winter run on a petrol/oil mix , and still crank it over by hand every so often during the winter months ,Anyone else got bizarre laying up plans , thoughts or suggestions ?, apart from yer big softee why not move to the S.of France ,

I'm spending Saturday prepping my three ('66, '87 and '88) for use through the winter. The 87 will continue to be the daily hack (kept outside) with the 66 van mainly used for camping weekends. The 88 I'll be keeping at my parents for when I visit.
As for the Mehari... I parked it up 18 months ago and left it... but it started fine the other week.
I fitted a rebuilt starter motor to the daily today and its much improved starting, the power draw is FAAAAR lower and it spins much better. Aside from that, the points are good, I'll change the engine/gearbox oil and crack on using it.

Nice one! Winter for me is business as usual. The cars love Winter, it's only some owners that don't ..

Roco, it's not a two-stroke engine, so why bother mucking around with oil in the petrol?
Far better to pop the plugs out and inject some oil into the combustion chambers, then park the engine at TDC before refitting the plugs...

Ah that's useful to know for spare engines.

I fitted new barrels and pistons (602) to an engine. I took off some 652 ones. The engine had been in a shed for a number of years and had had the manifold removed. There was a mouse nest in one of the exhaust ports.

The mouse port(!), barrel side was pitted with rust at the top! Storing at tdc, would have helped prevent this( the rust, not the mouse). Also a good idea to block all orrifices if possible to keep air out.

The pistons looked new, so I had the 652 barrels honed. I drove on that engine for a while, but it developed piston slap.

No plans here to "lay up" for winter.
I've fitted the muff, sprayed some "anti-fog" spray on the rear window * and it won't be getting used in icy/salty road conditions [or put in the garage wet if it rains] .....that's all.
Somehow, I find the interior of a warm insulated dry 2CV a very comforting place to be in cold weather ....that smell of old upholstery, cardboard heater tubes & slightly warm engine oil [and yes, it is engine oil, and not fumes]
* Anti fog visor spray .....available from most good motorcycle shops, useful for spraying inside my helmet visor too.
