In the Barbour works in association with Pete Sparrow
BMW on Ami Super Chassis
Visa 652 bell housing and GSA type box

Or just removed?
Won't the adaptor plate do the same job as that crossmember was designed for? Transferring static and dynamic loads from the engine & gearbox into the longerons...

Ami Super chassis and running gear a good choice if you're going a bit Deutsch in the engine department.

I could just remove the cross member , but i think it would reduce the stiffness of the front legs, as there is a lot more metal in those legs than normal.
moreover it will need some sort of member below the engine to be able to fit a sump guard in order that we dont do a Pete Sparrow and drive over a cast iron man hole and remove the BMW sump!

Doesn't that mean it might be a good plan to locate the principal stiffening/bashplate mounting crossmember forward of the engine? ;)

Actually the one issue with the BMW lump is it sticks about 40 mm below the chassis in normal fitting ( as it has a deep sump)
so a full engine bash guard is almost a must, if the car is lowered . ( Pete Sparrow got experience of this)!!
In reality this probably means some sort of step down (folded steel guard) from the front to the rear of the engine
so to put in a cross member under the gear box to mount this guard would probably make good sense.

Louis,
probably best not to mention this within earshot of Pete, but...

The leading edge/crossmember is the one which will ensure most protection, isn't it? ;)

I've mounted my engine lower than 'normal', on a lower than normal chassis, and my sump / chassis mounted guard often creates scores in the road. Hopefully a new colourful mount will arrive and this will be a bit less frequent..
