I've had this car for so long and always thought I'd end up doing this at some point - left the oil cap off and off I drove. Didn't realise until smoke billowed into the car and I'd left a trail of smoke all down the road. Very messy engine! But kind of shiny! A proper fire extinguisher moment until I opened the bonnet and saw the devastation. It had even sprayed out of the side vents onto the wings ![]() |

Welcome, now you are a real 2cv driver... Happened to all of us at some point (but not everyone makes it public) ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Try to keep it doing it only once otherwise it will be going into your ego... ![]() ![]() |

Do you have the felt under the bonnet? It gets into that and drips down the wings for eternity... At least there's no harm done. |

Stops them rusting tho! ![]() Perhaps half a mile with the filler lid open should be part of the winter prep? |

If it took the driver a while to realise what was happening, it can mean that main brake pads and handbrake pads will need to be replaced, so not the best way to rustproof under the bonnet... ![]() Russell wrote: Do you have the felt under the bonnet? Yes I have the felt Russ, hadn't thought to check that. So much oil, it was quite impressive! Ken you are probably right about the brake pads. I have given the brakes a clean with a really hot jetwash and they improved but still aren't right. I've sprayed a load of brake cleaner on them today but haven't needed to drive it anywhere to see if that made a difference. |

The brakes have recovered it seems. I soaked them with brake cleaner spray and left them, drove it today and the brakes have their bite again. Happy days. |
