Post subject:  How much to change pistons and barrels?

Ok have discovered that a piston ring or two have broken and partially siezed the o/s barrel on my daughters 2cv, mechanic reckons its ruined the barrel, piston etc and will replace both sides as matter of course and re do valves etc. How much do people reckon this would cost?
My daughter is desperate for her car back and i'm up to my neck renewing the swivels on my Landy and a garage full of grp sports car in bits so i'm between a rock and a hard place.
Any body care to guess?

cheers

Colin

Pistons and barrels are around £150. If you buy them, I'll change them for £100 at your place or mine.

Maybe allow some time for checking (and adjusting) the ignition timing, so that the new set of pistons and barrels don't suffer the same fate?

Worth trying to see if you can get a set of 9/1 's too ......it made a world of difference to my 2CV when Ken did mine.

I found 2 sets of 8.5s today, with rings on.

I wish I had had that info before it went away, my car is now at a mechanics and i've got a bill for £500, tbh i'm gutted, if I had time and the knowledge or someone I knew could work on 2cv's then it would be better, I dont have the time or knowledge, i'm seriously involved in Imps and Landrovers and imps especially can almost work on with my eyes closed, I know bugger all about 2cv engines. I know things cost and you're paying for the knowledge but thats money that I dont readily have, i was expecting in the region of £350. Still hey ho, live and learn.

cheers

That is true. Before i2F, before I was in 2cvGB I paid over £1000 for a chassis change... work that I did myself yesterday and really enjoyed... and cost me nothing.

You'll get there!

If you can work on Land Rovers and Imps, you can work on 2cvs. The principles are broadly similar, it's just that the engineering is a lot less crude than on Land Rovers. (I had a Series 2a for a while and found it an absolute pig to work on after my 2cvs!)

Yep, have a little confidence and have a go. A 2cv is vastly simpler than both an imp and a land rover, and working on one is a much more pleasant affair than either, it's just that initial step of delving into the unknown. If what you've been charged is inclusive of parts then its a reasonable price for a business to charge. I would estimate that to do a good, thorough job it will take around 4 hours. Somebody familiar with 2cvs could have it done in half that. As it'll probably get an oil change at the same time, with a filter etc, plus any helicoiling or repairs to things that break when it comes apart, I can see where £500 could go to if I had overheads to worry about.
