Which chassis do you have? I recently made one for my car, but I also happened upon one that I removed from the car some years ago. There's not much measuring required, a couple of crossbars to each chassis leg and a single central spine for the towbar.

Just to add to the discussion - I saw a tow bar the other day that had the front legs going all the way to the large bolts that hold the rear beam on. I thought this looked a stronger than drilling the thin chassis.
Found it....

Yeah .....that would be better if the car still had the original chassis, the rear legs often rot through [being "closed" box section prob'ly dont help].....however,SLC chassis's are stronger than the original ones anyway and the rear legs on mine aint an enclosed box section.
btw .....that SLC chassis was fitted to my 1988 [Portugese built] 2cv in 1995 .....my original chassis was fubar'd after only 7 years.

I welded in a new crossmember to mount the central hitch piece and as a jacking point, then I welded a plate to the central piece which bolts to the rearmost chassis crossmember. I wanted something that could be removed quickly as I generally don't like having a towbar on the car.

Made the towbar from some nice stainless found in work, but will leave the final weld of the tow ball end until I get a rear bumper so I can judge where it sits
Thanks for all who assisted
