How many people who don't have a pre '73 car are using black/silver number plates? On a car like a 2cv, would anybody even notice?

Also food for thought:

Loads I bet. I'm changing mine though (came with them), I think you should only put them on pre '73's. But I'm just boring like that!

I've just ordered some period replacements. I doubt you get in too much trouble, if you got "caught" at all, but I bet I would!!!

i'm with Louise on this - i think that black & silver plates should only be used on pre '73 cars. I like number plates on cars that are either original or match the era they're from. I don't like plates with fancy backgrounds, manufacturers badges, or itallics!

I'm trying to get a pair made up for my 2cv - my old man had some French style plates made up in a hypermarket years ago & subsquently lost the original front plate! :x I can't find anyone that produces just a plain plate using the correct old Charles Wright font used on vehicles prior to 2001. The 'New Charles Wright font' is reduced in size to allow for the GB euroband on the left side of the plate. Although there's only a small difference, to me it's instantly noticeable & it just doesn't look right! :ugeek:

actually Framptons are the only company i know that can still supply the old charles wright font. some companies even deny there's a difference. I had Framptons make a plate up for the beachcomber - it looked nice, but only lasted a couple of weeks before the backing started to lift on the bend in the bonnet! :(

I have pre-2001 style plates on my 2cv, but in aluminium. To overcome the problems associated with bending a plate round the bonnet, I have used brackets bought from Homebase and bent them into a C shape. Fix the brackets to bonnet and then fix the plate to the brackets, keeping the plate flat, so eliminating the above problem. Simples!!

I do. Post '73 car with a '71 cherished number. French style silver and black. I've got UK plates in the boot if the plod ever pick me up on the French plates - but the UK ones are silver and black anyway!

Louise, I think it's a shame you're changing those plates - they really suit the car and look like they've been there for ever.

it looks ok on J though. For me it's the reg letter that makes it right or wrong in my eyes. Pre '73 plates with a '71 year letter is fine! lol

Agree with you on the fonts, Neil. The fact that the Quattro in Ashes to Ashes has the wrong font annoys me every time it's on!

Got the new plates, they bend for the bonnet really easily; too easily :? so should be a doddle to fix. If you remember to order the fixings

Only let down is the 9 its a nicer style on the old plates.

Pics in a sec.

Will have to get something to attach them to the car.

very nice!! they look the same style as TIMMY! had made up for Jeremy. I reckon you should use stainless self tappers - least then they won't rust!
