Post UK Historic Vehicle free tax extended by one year
Yesterday's budget sneaked this one in...

Page 86, http://cdn.hm-treasury.gov.uk/budget2013_complete.pdf
Quote:
2.148 VED: classic vehicle exemption
– The Government will extend the cut off date from which classic vehicles are exempt from VED by one year. From 1 April 2014 a vehicle manufactured before 1 January 1974 will be exempt from paying VED. (Finance Bill 2014)

Also, SORNs won't expire.

Top tip - when you get a reminder to do one, do all of 'em. It doesn't matter if you do 'em more often than needed, and it means they'll all expire at the same time next year, so all you need is the DVLA/Royal Fail combo to let one reminder accidentally slip through their net of incompetence... <grin>

Now that IS a top tip! Thanks.

Don't get me started on Royal Mail, though! I received a contract in the post last week - took 10 days to get to me. Sent it back first class - took 7 days! Also received a letter from Post Office, telling me of big sorting-office changes, and importance of parcels to their future operations. Same day, at 4.30pm, I bought a watch on ebay. Arrived next day, 1st class, at 9am. I think this confirms where the Royal Mail sees its priorities.

Conclusion: for fast delivery send letters in small boxes!

You can - assuming you're not relying on receiving the reminder to do so via the postman...

Are the pre-2001 tax rates staying the same as well then? I've just done the merc. and that's the same as last year at £220.

The 2CVs coming up to 28years old so a few years to go yet to be free.

Previous page of that big PDF...
Quote:
2.146 VED rates and bands – From 1 April 2013 VED rates will increase in line with RPI, apart from VED rates for heavy goods vehicles (HGVs) which will be frozen in 2013-14. (Finance Bill 2013). The Government has no plans to make significant reforms to the structure of VED for cars and vans in this Parliament.

So at a guess, and assuming they want to keep to "round numbers", 3%ish would give a fiver on <1550cc and a tenner on over, maybe a fiver on each.

You do have to do it each year now,it's a money making scam as you get a nice fat fine if you forget :o Also if you buy a vehicle that's sorned you have to re sorn it,or you a likey to get fine once the last owner informs DVLA.

Note vehicle must remain in UK..
