my ignition button packed up so i have converted the 2 wires to the brake fluid check button instead, the ignition still works by using a retro fitted keyswitch btw-- but i,m using the brake fluid level button to energize the starting motor now is this an ok thing regarding the forthcoming mot ? incidentally the origional ignition switch on the steering columb is no longer fitted thank for any replys fella 2cv-ers

Hi Ayjay, I would say its an mot failure if the button does no longer operate the brake fluid level, unless an us suspecting mot inspector is not familiar with the switches on a 2cv. |

I don't think (but I could be wrong) that the brake fluid level test button is an MOTable item. However, Ayjay, it seems to me that the easiest option would be to get hold of a spare one and leave the original wired in. Dedicated starter buttons can be bought from any car accessory shop for a few quid. |

The issue may be in the lack of a steering lock. I think the testers like to see a keyed ignition switch, plus a second method of theft prevention, usually the steering lock. How the starter is operated isn't an issue, neither is the lack of a test switch for the brake fluid level warning light, 'normal' cars don't have them. The steering lock only affects vehicles post 2001. |

thanks for the input so far fellas, my mot garage is a "sypathetic " place regarding 2cv.s he rents out old vehcles too, for trips into the newforest |

Yes but most cars don't have a switch on the dashboard to test that the bulb works, and in the unlikely event that they do it certainly isn't a testable item. |

It might be that there has to be some means of testing the warning lamp though, which in a "normal" car is done by putting the handbrake on. |

David Eden and I both did articles for 2CVGB News last year, (mixed together for the February edition, I think????), about the new MOT rules for 2012. Not all of the 'proposed changes for 2012' have come in yet, but the operation of the brake fluid warning circuit was one of those proposed changes, so when it comes in, it will need to work as the manufacturer intended. As Jonathan says, the new steering lock rules don't affect cars of 2CV age. |
