Without wishing to drag this thread down into tedious and alarming technical detail, it's possible that this is a result of the joint between the cylinder barrel and head leaking exhaust gases into the engine cowling. If it is, it's quite serious and needs sorting, which you would do by removing the head and lapping the joint in using an old barrel with all the fins ground off and some grinding paste. It's not a difficult job, but it's usually worthwhile heeding some tedious technical advice to avoid wrecking a set of cylinder heads . Does it only happen when the heater is on?

Ah... see I was assuming it would be a slight leak from an Exhaust joint somewhere along the line Is there a quickish way (Without specialist tools) of checking it Please?

Edit and its heater in pretty much any position.

The tried and tested method is, put ones manly hand close to any of said joints, whilst running, and await a certain amount of warm exaust gases to warm your digits to the "fuck, that's hot" level and you have found the leak......

However,
it's less painful and also more accurate if you wimp out and use a length of windscreen washer pipe as a listening tube to pin down the exact location of a leak.

Not my idea, you'll need to blame Roy @ ECAS for spoiling the manly aspect... :roll:

Ah the standard check then I was guessing that would be the prefered method. Nice one That will be booked for saturday then with a Jumbo tub of gungum and some spanners.
Fantastic :D I was more on about the heads leaking though to be honest or does that work the same way?
Soapy water and a brush maybe?

Thats a new one on me, See I just knew coming here was a good idea, as much as I love a Haynes Manual you just cannot beat talking to someone with real live been there done that experience.

You can get a good idea of whether the heads are leaking or not by turning the heater to hot, pulling the heater tube off at the bulkhead end and sticking your nose in it with the engine running. If you can smell exhaust gases on either side, a leaky head joint is a possibility. If you take the heat exchanger off, you can see part of the head joint and sometimes you might see black marks on the mating face of the head where the gases have been escaping. However, if you've been getting exhaust fumes in the car whether the heater is on or off, I'd be inclined to think it's just a leaky exhaust joint somewhere.

Check for exhaust leaks by dribbling 2stroke down the carb and seeing where it smokes from, or I suppose one could tie a budgerigar to each exhaust joint and see which one croaks first.
