Reniflaud is the 'oil filler' inside is a valve (or the remains of) that lets air out of the crankcase but not back in to maintain negative pressure in the crank case.

Frotterus and batteurs are part of the suspension set up on older cars. Batteurs are like red cans inboard of the kingpin housing, they contain magic bouncing things that give 60s cars a positively orgasmic ride.

Frotteur is french for 'rubbing' (DONT google that) and were fitted inside the front axel I believe. I dont have them and dont really understand them.

Next you should learn:

Forest
AZAM
AZAM6
M4
M28
AK
AKS
AZU

Its like a Wet Paint sign I felt a compulsive urge to google Frotteur... I am now conversed with something I didnt need to know but now feel the need to drop the word into polite conversation at work (Im a bit bad like that)
I am starting to feel slightly less all at sea with all this now , I may well have something to put on my checklist.
Fred tends to give me a bit of a Gassing in the Mornings on the way to work, It may well be possable that Mr Reniflaud is causing that?
A Forest would be a Belgian built Citroen.
Im guessing the other things are derivatives of some sort but although at this point I could tell you the difference between a Myrad of Aircooled VW detail changes I have lots to learn on the Citroen front.
Thanks for your input :D

Vent Flap is also the word for a rather clever device which is somehow able to be air tight at the same time as letting vast quantities of water through onto your knees. See also: windscreen wiper spindles.

Fred has this Waterfall thing going on too, Im thinking of installing some Rubber Ducks in the Footwell... Or maybe a new Screen surround as the isopon one just aint cutting it

main thing to remember with A seriese, and their engines in particular, is that many seem to think that the common processes and practices that go on in a normal 4 cycle internal combustion engine do not apply to a 2cylinder aircooled engine. Such things a timing, tappets carburation, exhaust. Chassis flex and Tyres cause no end of heated debate.

;^)
I'm looking forward to learning all about it, As you may well already have guessed Im not impartial to Modifying/Lowering stuff either. I do know in certain camps that can cause people to get a bit excitable.

Live and learn :D Why sidewinder though?

I have a sneaking suspicion it might be to do with the Falklands war. Sidewinder missiles were used in '82 by the Harrier pilots.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AIM-9_Sidewinder

Which meant the word was in the public consciousness in the early 80s. First sidewinders were 84-ish? Earlier?

Plus it sounds cool. Obviously.

</relurks>

Hmmmm I wouldnt rule it out , sounds plausable :)

Does nazism come up a lot on VW threads? I mean, the Volkswagon was built as the vehicle to transport socialism across the globe surely?

Sidewinder was used well before the Falklands War as nomenclature for Ami Super powered A series - I seem to recall talking about them at my one and only visit to a 2 cvgb meeting in north Manchester around '81....

Without wishing to drag this thread down into tedious and alarming technical detail, it's possible that this is a result of the joint between the cylinder barrel and head leaking exhaust gases into the engine cowling. If it is, it's quite serious and needs sorting, which you would do by removing the head and lapping the joint in using an old barrel with all the fins ground off and some grinding paste. It's not a difficult job, but it is quite involved. Does it only happen when the heater is on?
