Nice one Will! Looks like they've all gone now - they were a bit of a bargain at the price. Hopefully mine will turn up this week, and I can get the doofer wired in. Under the back seat I spose is the best place for em?

Yep I think I got the last one! Bargain at £50 off list price! I've done the measurements and it will fit nicely under the rear seat (or front seat even). Anywhere that doesn't leak lol. A healthy upgrade over my little Pioneer tube which can go in the van :-)

I think I'll be going for under the back seat - in the centre.

Question: It's ok to fix the sub down with self tappers here? Not too close to fuel tank? - can't remember how much clearance there is.

Question: Would you take the feed from the front speakers which are fed by the head unit, or the rear speakers which are fed from the auxillary amp?

Cheers.

Assuming your head unit only has one pre-out? In which case I'd keep the pre-out to the amp running your 6x9's and use speaker-level input from the rear output on the head unit to run the sub. If you have two pre-outs then use the other one for the sub (because using pre-outs is preferable to high-level input in an ideal world)

Yup can't see a reason not to fix the sub to the seat box beneath the rear seat. There is a good few inches free space in the seat box itself and tank is further back and lower down out of the way.

If any of that makes sense!

Cheers Will! Under the back seat it is for the sub when it arrives.

You know when you start thinking about stuff you don't understand? Well, here goes....

not sure about the pre-outs/high level input stuff.

The head unit's a Sony CDX GT212 (http://pdf.crse.com/manuals/2699135111.pdf) if you feel bored enough to look. Fairly poverty level spec, so I think it only has speaker level outputs.

Currently the amp Sony xm-sd12x (http://pdf.crse.com/manuals/2586733111.pdf) takes its feed from the rear speaker-level output, connected via an rca jack cord to the line input connection.

The rear 6x9's are then connected to the amp via speaker cable.

I wonder if I should be using the high-level input connection to the amp instead?

I've a feeling I've got the amp connected incorrectly. Am I making the amp receive a signal that's already amplified by the Head Unit? - might explain the clipping I get at fairly modest volume levels????

If I need a high level connector, where do I get one from? Web trawl has drawn a blank.

Cheers Buddy!

Update...

Rear speaker ouput from Head unit connected to rca cable with this...

http://redirectingat.com/?id=315X493&ur ... 626%23dtab

Which I think converts signal from high to low level.

Fuck it, I'm tired and confused now!

Russ - I can do, or if it all works just play some tunes at a camp!

Hmm, well it is true that your head unit has no preout connections so anything that you connect will be speaker level. You may be better off ditching the adaptor you have and connect the amp directly using the speaker cable high-level input. I don't know if this convertor would interfere with the input signal and I guess that it *could* be upsetting it's output so I'd be inclined to play it safe.

Do the same with the Sub, but using the front speaker outputs this time. I wouldn't try to spur off the rears to connect both the amp and sub.

Now, you'll need to do something to run the front speakers, the easiest thing to do would be to tap into the front speaker cabling and run some offshoot wires to them.

It's a little complicated as you do not have any pre-outs but you should get some reasonable results from this set-up.

Did a little bit more trawling. It appears (according to an AV forum I found) that the speaker/rca converter I've got performs the same function (more or less) as the high level input in the amp.
I'll keep my eyes peeled for a high level input cable though - didn't get one with the amp for some reason.

Anyway, big box of Umpfty Umpfty Subness arrived today. I'll be playing at the weekend. Definately going to link into the front speakers. I think cables are supplied - not opened box yet.

Cheers for the advice Will - I'll keep you posted!
