I was chatting to a bloke who worked for a UK company that designed its products in-house and sent the specs to a Chinese company for them to manufacture. The company specified a certain type of material, I can't remember the detail, but the Chinese factory suggested they could make the product for well under half the cost if they swapped to different materials. The Chinese were very surprised when their suggestion was rejected on the grounds of quality. The Chinese told them they were the only western company that had refused their suggestion to cut costs.

To cut to the chase, the Chinese can make high-quality stuff if they have to, but the western companies don't want them to do so.

They definitely can make good stuff, but its usually awful and a real waste of resources.
I know an engineer who was sent to China to a factory that makes bicycle frames. His job was to oversee the welding quality since there had been such bad problems. He said it was really shocking, he had the ability to shut the whole large factory down whenever there was a problem bad enough, and in his words - it happened a lot.

I've often thought it'll be good one day. Made in Koreaa or Taiwan or wherever used to be bad didn't it, but now its good if it says that on it, and its the China thing we have to worry about. Hopefully one day it'll change in the same way..

I suppose you only need to look at our beloved MG (certainly for me anyway). The first cars coming out of China (MG6, MG3. MG GS) were/are not good cars. The stuff that is now coming onto the UK and European market are pretty decent (even if I still refer to them as Ming Ghastlys  ). Certainly better quality than the stuff coming out of Longbridge in the early 2000s. Still room for improvement though.

It would be great if the 2cv clubs did make an list of good and bad parts

That would be great, indeed! Very helpful to everybody restoring or repairing a car to keep it, not to sell it on. And maybe it can force some of the baddest products out off the marked, if people stopped buying them.

And since this is an International forum ;) the info from the clubs could be put up here, for everybody to find it.

Finally, got off my ass and opened the bonnet of the Shed to see why it wouldn't start.

I had come out the last few days to crank it over in the hope the 'faulty car starting fairies' had been over night to fix it, but to no avail. I assume thats because they are also subject to lockdown!

Anyway .... Electric fuel pump was making a whirring noise, so didn't think it was that.

checked some electricary was getting to coils etc. No problem!

That leaves fuel! Took the hose off the carb and turned ignition on. No Fuel!

Lifted the rear floor to get to the pump and filter. Turned on ignition and tapped the pump with a small hammer. The note changed!

Tried to crank engine, but the battery is flat now .

Spare battery and jump leads, and it started instantly. :D
