I am curious....the black part's between the top and cylinders. Why is it there, and which engines had it? Piture borrowed from this site |

German market. To reduce spillage if leak from head occurs. Anti-pollution I think. |

Much more likely to be 'anti-carbon monoxide in hot air delivered to passenger compartment if joints between cylinder heads and barrels leaking', unfortunately... ![]() Only seen these ducts on German market engines. ken knightley wrote: German market. Ok.... Only on German car's. That's why I have never seen them. But seriously.....how can those things do ANYTHING with a leaking head/barrel? Strange things. |

Hi EirikJ, they cannot limit or prevent the leakage of combustion gasses from the joint, however they probably do quite a good job of directing them away from airflow which could reach the cabin. The outlet from that cowling is on the underside of the head and if erosion of a cylinder head joint does happen, it's invariably most severe diametrically opposite the spark plug... ken p.s. Wonder why some of the photographs on that site have been flipped horizontally? ![]() EirikJ wrote: Ok.... Only on German car's. That's why I have never seen them. Ah, ok, an outlet on the underside. Well, I guess there is some thinking behind them and a function. Still a bit strange though hehe.... |

Not only German engines - I got a replacement engine for Steves Dudley when I wanted to rebuild its original engine due to eroded cylinder head and had it out of a C plate english registered original engine D*lly.... |

Nels, I think you'd have to look at an awful lot of UK registered cars to find another one like that. The first engine I found with that fitting was from a German car which had only been in the UK 24 hours before it was torched in the student area of Leeds. The second one was on Daz's German registered 2CV4 engine, never seen another one in 30 years of working on these cars... ken Nelsthebass wrote: Not only German engines - I got a replacement engine for Steves Dudley when I wanted to rebuild its original engine due to eroded cylinder head and had it out of a C plate english registered original engine D*lly.... |

Must admit when I got it home and went to put it in the car I thought "what the feck are they" very strange and I couldnt see a real point to them - also a right pain to get off when they are old as I swapped one of the heads for the eroded head once I put new pistons in the old block and had a right faff getting it off.... |

Surprised you didn't make the connection... ![]() Also hope you sorted out the ignition timing so it didn't happen again. ken Nelsthebass wrote: Must admit when I got it home and went to put it in the car I thought "what the feck are they" very strange and I couldnt see a real point to them - also a right pain to get off when they are old as I swapped one of the heads for the eroded head once I put new pistons in the old block and had a right faff getting it off.... |
