Hi,just wondering which gas folk recommend for car body repairs,recently bought a secondhand mig 185 amp with a bottle of cougar gas,went to my local gas man today who said he could supply krystal 5,argonshield or cougar , wasnt overhelpfull explaining the differences,what do you guys recommend

cougar or argoshield light are pretty much the same being co2/argon/o2 and what you want.Dunno what krystal 5 is think the Cougar comes with a built in Regulator so that may save you £30 if your setting up, you need an argon reg for the BOC argoshield BOC insist thats its a 300bar expensive one but ive yet to get a bottle that reads anywhere near the 230bar limit on my reg you get a more stable arc and better penetration/hotter weld pool not what initially you think you need with a biscuit tin bulkhead but if you try with co2 at the lower settings the weld bead is cooler sits proud so you need slightly higher power, wheras the argon mix wets and flows the weldpool and you casn use a lower power setting and have a more controllable arc-----your still going to blow holes though

Hi All If you want to avoid rental on the bottle and being tied into a contract also being charged for picking it up yourself instead of delivery charge it's a rip off. Somebody I know here in France paid 284€ for for a 20 Ltr refill plus delivery and bottle rental. Thanks for all replies.been welding up D*lly today with the cougar gas,was fine when i got used to it,bought back memories of school metal work trying to weld bean cans together

I use CO2, aka pub gas. If you want beautiful welds than argon helps, but if you just want to get the job done for minimum expenditure then its the way forwards. I got two cylinders (about 30kg each, not sure about the capacity) for £35 if I remember rightly. When they are empty you take them back and swap for a full one at a lower price. |

yes works a treat and as a bathroom fitter/tiler there is usually a plentiful supply of copper offcuts. |
