What made you buy a 2CV in the first place? Personally, when I was very young my mum bought one because she had always fancied one as a bit of fun. That was when I was 3 years old, they got involved with their local 2CV club so every weekend when we weren't going to watch racing we were at 2CV camps and meetings. Soon after they bought another, and then another and then another. Then my father gave up racing Minis and switched to racing a 2CV instead, so every weekend was a 2CV event one way or the other!

By the time I was 17 my mum had sold her last 2CV and my first cars were Minis, when you're 17 you can think a 2CV just isn't cool! Luckily I destroyed my Mini in an accident and to get by my parents bought me a 1989 2CV, which I had so much fun in right up until I broke the chassis and the car was scrapped. That was it for a couple of years but you know what 2CVs are like, you are always addicted after your first try, so I bought a Dyane and then a Charleston! It was downhill from there, I started to go to 2CV meetings and now I know I'll never be without a 2CV or A-series in my life!

I'm sure not everybody was destined to own a 2CV this way, so how did you get involved, and what made you realise they were the car for you?

well, a school friend called Robin, mum had one; Jade green 2cv6 club - reg number GCG 205W, i was about 7 or 8 years old at the time & joined up at the local Judo club. Robin was also a member & his mum (Dominique) was French, she married an English guy & had been living over here for several years. She'd always owned 2cv's & this was her 2nd since moving over here. She would drop us the the local church hall every Wednesday night - i used to look forward to the ride more than the Judo practice!

I remember my first trip in it vividly, i loved sitting in the back & being able to see through the windscreen - something i wasn't able to do in my Dads car at the time (vauxhall viva). I used to suffer badly with travel sickness, but in the 2cv i didn't. I travelled in that car on a regular basis & fell in love with it - i knew it was the car for me. From then on i started collecting anything & everything to do with 2cv's, joined 2cvGB when i was 12 in December '89 & for my 12th Birthday my Dad hired a Plum & Custard D*lly from the local Citroen independent specialists - Desborough Motors, now sadly no more...
My dad ended up falling in Love with 2cv's, so much so that he bought B186 ADV on my 13th Birthday - a car that i now own!

Fiat 126s are great fun, but you can't thrash them like a 2CV, they are just too fragile and a bugger to work on too, whoever thought sticking the engine in the boot was a good idea eh?

Parents....

A 2cv was the only brand new car they could afford when they got married, since then they have had many 2cvs a dyane and an acadiane mixte (that they want back)

Bought up with them mum and dad used to live in rugely and the 602 squadron was the closest local group at the time so they joined met lots of friends who all had muchos fun at camps while they were young (what we are doing now but even worse bonnet sledging driving to each other etc and not getting told off for it).
the 1st generation had us 2nd generation and im not sure we could get out of it if we tried, ive got a whole other family from being in the club its ace!

Ive been to every world meeting including cheltenham in 1985 when i was 8 months old except portugal!

Post Re: How did you get into 2CV's?
My Dad bought his first one, a brand new Rio Red N reg 2cv6, when he moved to London in 1975. Sadly he'd sold it and bought a Fiesta by the time I was born, but in 1981 he bought a brand new X reg Jaune Mimosa 2cv6 Club, and joined 2CVGB straight afterwards. We started going to camps in about 1984, and my first world meeting was Cheltenham, when I was 5. I was totally bitten by 2cvs from a very young age, and collected brochures and avidly looked through the club mag every month. When asked to draw a "Christmas Picture" at school when I was about 6, I drew a yellow 2cv with fairy lights on it...

We continued going to UK camps and world meetings through the 80s and early 90s (by now in a green and white D*lly that my Dad got when it was 6 months old in 1987 and still owns today). Since 1981 he has only owned 2cvs, despite having a daily 50 mile round trip to work until he retired last May. Since 1990 he's kept the D*lly for best and run another 2cv on a day to day basis (first a Grey Charleston, then a Bamboo, and for the past 9 years, a Sky Blue Special which is just coming up to 200,000 miles, all on its original, untouched, engine and gearbox).

I got my first car when I was 17, in 1997, and it was a T reg green Dyane that I bought locally for £70. I've had 11 or 12 since then - 2cvs/Dyanes/Mehari/Acadiane, many of which have been cars that I've bought cheaply, done up, and sold. Although I have owned my current 3 for some time now. I still don't see any point in running a more modern type of car (though I wouldn't mind a C15!).

Haha, hello!

When I was about 4 the parentage wanted a cheap car as a runaround, so my dad rebuilt a D*lly that had blown up....and painted it mint green. It was supposed to be that light greeny colour (I can't remember its actual paint code and proper name, sorry Jono.) but went a bit wrong. Anyhoo, I think the first camp I went to was an international in Salisbury, we met my adopted 2CV family and have been with them ever since. Ahhhh.
