Post The SORN nightmare...
For UK based 2CV fans and possibly those who've moved to France with their UK car but not told the DVLA.

Speaking from experience...

don't forget your SORN declarations kids or forget that if you buy a car that was on SORN that the SORN Declaration on it gets CANCELLED when ownership is changed. Just another money making scheme brought to you by the DVLA.

ALSO please note, the DVLA are not under any obligation to tell you when your SORN expires so this is a real issue for the busy minded amoungst us.

With SORN you don't have a handy disc to remind you when you are due for renewal so put it in your diary etc.

Also check this out re insurance.

Don't get caught out.

Hardly a nightmare, you buy a shitter and register it sorn, and so far every year I've got reminders on all 5 cars I theoretically own.

Hi all.

I read this in the middle of the night, went through my file of car documents and couldnt find the SORN acknowledgement letter for one of the cars (I currently have 8 vehicles, 4 of my 2CVs are on SORNS).

Oddly 3 of my 2CVs on SORNS have the same SORN date 31 August. So I do them on line each year. One is 30th November and I went into panic as I couldnt fine that notice, although was sure I did it.

Just phoned DVLA and I did do it and it is SORNED. I asked if I could move the SORN date so all of them were on the same date and all you have to do is "re-SORN" them early. So in theory anyone with lots of cars off the road can have them all due on the same day.

I also asked if they always send out reminders and the answer was yes ! I have to say I have always had one for each vehicle and from now on will just SORN them all on the same date anyway.

I don't understand why the motoring press are up in arms. If a vehicle is sorned, then all is good. If it's not, it has to be insured. Surely that makes sense? Or is is more complicated than that?

Hi

The message I've been getting from the DVLA is they are not obliged to send out a reminder, so do not rely on them to tell you. Simples so just stick it in your diary.

Not trying to raise alarm here just awareness, spoken to 3 2CV people so far who've all found that they are in for a fine.

Yes there are variations.

If the car you have is off the road pre 1998, you don't need to declare SORN or do you? Its a bit vague.

If you buy a Car, thats a resto project or has been off the road ie no chace of an MOT etc. the SORN has to be reapplied, the process is that you enter the Document number off the V5 that's come back in your name.

If you buy a car that's been off the road for a while (not SORN or the SORN period expired) and you try and either TAX it or Declare it SORN the system flags up the fact that there is duty missing and your details get passed to the enforcement section for a fine.

You can argue or plead with them but you just then have to pay for the outstanding duty minimum, or if you are unlucky end up with a fine.

In typical DVLA fashion I don't think this has been well though out just like the way they removed the Scrapped Checkbox off the V5, so you can't now buy a car for parts.

Sam...I dont think its about insurance....its a tax thing. Vehicle has to be taxes (which means insurance and MOT) ...but if it has no insurance, tax or MOT then it needs to be on a SORN.

Not sure about dates etc, but if a car isnt on the road and has no tax disk, then SORN it...at the moment it costs nothing....no doubt it will at some point !..

Interesting that there is no "scrapped" box...havnt brought a vehicle in the last few years....

No doubt owning our cars will be illegal soon....I have to admit I dont use the original valve caps....forgot to advise the "authorities" that I changed them...

....my car doesnt work, isnt on the road and I have the wrong valve caps....I deserve a good thrashing !!!
